So far, most solutions to our housing crisis have focused on subsidizing prospective buyers. But what if there were a way to make housing cheaper at every step of the process: cheaper to build, cheaper to buy, and still affordable for the next resident? I wrote about a trifecta of practical housing affordability measures that could really scale #housing #housingcrisis #manufacturedhousing #ADU #communitylandtrust #CLT #policy

Over the last 15 years, ideas crystallized among my generation that real social change would come only from mass protest and collective action. Volunteering, donating, and modifying one’s behavior were, at best, unproductive; at worst, harmful distractions from the change we really need.? I wrote an essay for Vox about the costs of these ideas, and why I changed my mind: https://lnkd.in/eDxfxehy

So it’s time for context and coconuts: Joe Biden is dropping out and endorsing Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. But does she actually give the party a better chance at beating Donald Trump in November than Biden? I laid out the case for and against Harris here, for Vox https://lnkd.in/gWuuzvmc

a cool thing: Vox is now on Climate Desk! ?????? This means you'll see more of our work published across the climate journalism space—and stories from our partners at Vox.com, too. I've long admired the reporting shared by the Climate Desk network and am thrilled to join this influential multi-media journalistic collaboration dedicated to exploring the impact—human, environmental, economic, political—of a changing climate. I’m excited about the start of this new initiative for Vox’s climate coverage. You can check out all of the stories shared by the consortium here: https://lnkd.in/g6S-7_V2

the New York Times once declared, “One of the worst career moves a woman can make is to have children.” But having kids isn't an inherent wage-and-job killer. I've spent the last few months digging into evolving research on the motherhood penalty. Women aren't wrong to suspect they'll pay a real economic price for having kids at younger ages, but those tradeoffs could also change with policy and culture. We all deserve a more nuanced conversation about this. https://lnkd.in/eJwMP4Bd

Tens of thousands of houses of worship could close in the next decade due to declining membership + rising costs. Building much-needed affordable housing on that land could provide these institutions with some new revenue streams, and/or ways to cement their mission-oriented legacies when they're gone. Building housing on land owned by religious institutions could also provide a way for cities to avoid the blight that comes from having large vacant properties — especially in smaller towns where the structures served as central civic anchors. I wrote about the "Yes in God's Backyard" movement—or #YIGBY— and why it offers a practical path forward for new housing in the US https://lnkd.in/e2zA4YSZ

A first-of-its-kind child care center opened up this year in San Diego, charging parents 50 percent less than market rate, and workers are paid 15 percent above local average. Hours are longer + more flexible. Only catch? You have to work for the San Diego Police Department I wrote about the police childcare model, which is spreading across the country. There's already a bipartisan bill in Congress to support it. Is it a good idea? Advocates think it'll help with recruitment, retention, and boosting women in the field. Others are wary of subsidizing law enforcement agencies further and boosting an employer-based benefit model for child care. read more at Vox: https://lnkd.in/e-nZKgPe
