March is Women’s History Month, but did you know it’s also Brain Injury Awareness Month? More than 5.3 million individuals in the U.S. are living with permanent brain injury-related disabilities. That’s 1 in 60 Americans. There’s another alarming statistic: domestic violence survivors experience brain injuries at staggeringly high rates. ??1 in 3 women experience physical violence from a partner—10 million adults nationwide. ?? Up to 80% of survivors have traumatic brain injuries. ??74% of domestic violence incidents involve head or neck injuries, like strangulation. Since 2022, VOA-GNY has been working with Safe Living Space to support survivors by implementing brain injury screenings as part of our domestic violence shelter intake process, and connecting those with suspected TBIs with the proper follow-up care. If you or someone you know needs safe shelter, call our 24/7 helpline 1-855-643-RISE (7473) or learn more at: voa-gny.org/dv #VOAGNY #BrainInjuryAwareness #EndDomesticViolence

Last week, Loews Corporation, SIM NY Metro, and NPower teamed up to host the second career readiness workshop for our clients at the Jamaica Women Employment Shelter! From resume edits to LinkedIn tips and mock interviews, volunteers shared practical insights to help our clients with their job search. ???? “The most important thing I learned today was how to have a professional job interview,” shared Maureen, one of the workshop participants. “It’s about your body language, your clothing, your do's and don'ts. It was very good. I learned a lot.” Maureen, who hopes to land a job in healthcare, left feeling more confident and prepared—and she’s not alone! This workshop empowered our clients with the confidence and tools they need to take the next step in their employment journey. A huge thank you to everyone from Loews Corporation, SIM NY Metro, and NPower including Herb Hofmann, Marina Marmut, Ricardo De La Cruz, Shanth Subbiah, Muhammad N. Ahmad, Sophie Regnier, Elizabeth Vasiu, and Jennifer Case for making this possible! #CommuityImpact #CareerReadinessWorkshop

Did you know that not having a financial safety net is a root cause of homelessness, even more so than low wages or losing a job? Wealth is more than just money—it’s resilience, stability, and a way to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. But exclusionary policies such as redlining have historically prevented people of color from accessing pathways to wealth including home ownership, the effects of which continue to place families of color in a position of relative disadvantage. Black Americans comprise roughly 13% of the nation’s population, but only 4% of the nation’s household wealth. Through our wealth-building support services, VOA-GNY strives to address these wealth gaps and help create pathways to financial stability. These programs include: ?? Financial Empowerment: Financial education, including budgeting and saving, to help clients learn how to accumulate wealth for long-term stability.? ?? Workforce Development: Career training, resume workshops, and job placement to secure a reliable income. What does independence look like as we age? For many seniors, it means staying connected, engaged, and living with dignity. That’s why housing programs like VOA-GNY’s East Clarke Place Senior Residence and Andrews Avenue Senior Residence, both designed by Magnusson Architecture and Planning PC, are critical as we work to build community and combat loneliness among seniors in our city.? Our residences are designed to foster connection and independence with: ?? On-site activities: Exercise groups, art therapy, game nights, and museum trips ?? Thoughtful design: Beautiful outdoor spaces and multiple bright common areas ?? Supportive services: Case management and wellness staff help residents access benefits and build community ties. To learn more about how design can help prevent loneliness in senior housing, listen to the episode of Monocle’s The Urbanist podcast featuring VOA-GNY’s President and CEO, Jeffrey Ginsburg: https://lnkd.in/evRn5PDB #VOAGNY #SeniorIndependenceMonth

Ever wonder what a day of lobbying in Albany looks like? This past Monday, VOA-GNY policy and program staff from our senior supportive housing residences and domestic violence shelters joined the Supportive Housing Network of New York’s Advocacy Day, meeting with key legislators to advocate for: ?? A 7.8% increase to human services contracts and Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) for staff. ?? Rate modernization for NYS Supportive Housing Program (NYSSHP) contracts to increase funding for services and staffing. ?? Doubling the funding for the Homeless Housing Assistance Program (HHAP) to develop and preserve more supportive housing across the state. Collectively, these changes are critical to ensuring we can continue providing essential services to our neighbors in need in an effective and sustainable way. A huge shoutout to the staff who made the trip and to all the organizations and partners who advocated alongside us! #EndHomelessness #VOAGNY #Advocacy
