Today, Volpatt Construction announced mid-year construction waste diversion data. We have been gathering data on demo and construction waste that we are diverting from landfills and will be reporting on the numbers twice yearly. With the help of many partners (listed in the press release below), from January 2024 to the end of June 2024 we’ve successfully diverted 275 tons of waste from landfills. That is equivalent to 63% of waste collected from multiple job sites. While we are excited to announce these numbers and will continue to focus on waste diversion, one of the goals of this announcement is to set a standard for our region and begin positioning Pittsburgh as a leader in green building practices. DM Michael Volpatt if you want more information on our waste diversion practices. -------------------- Pittsburgh, PA – August 5th, 2024 – Volpatt Construction, a general contractor and construction management firm serving the Western PA Tri-State area, today released the company’s mid-year waste diversion data. Since January of 2024 and with the help of local partners, Volpatt Construction diverted more than 275 tons of waste from landfills. That amount is equivalent to 63% of all waste collected across multiple job sites. The data is being released to help support the company’s “Dumpster Last” philosophy and its focus on greener building practices. The Environmental Protection Agency estimated that 600 million tons of construction and demolition debris were generated in the United States in 2018, which is more than twice the amount generated by municipal solid waste. “As an industry, we need to think more creatively about how we divert waste from the landfill. While recycling remains important, other creative methods should be considered as well,” said Michael Volpatt, Vice President of Marketing and Innovation at Volpatt Construction. “Our efforts would not be possible without multiple partners across the region that have helped us think more creatively and build a toolbox of best practices that we can use on projects moving forward.” Marc Mondor, AIA, Principal of evolveEA, a regional sustainability consulting and design firm, states, "The importance of construction waste diversion away from landfills can't be overstated.?The environmental benefits and opportunities for local jobs and the circular economy are tremendous. We commend Volpatt for their proactive approach and eagerness to address this issue." Volpatt’s partners in waste diversion include Michael Brothers Companies, Boyd Roll Off and Transfer Services, Construction Junction, Doors Unhinged, and others. The team is working on building out a larger list of partners that will help the company and the industry adopt greener building initiatives.

The Dumpster Last Philosophy? Embracing Waste Diversion Strategies in Construction? By: Michael Volpatt As we all know, construction and demolition contribute significantly to the generation of waste. In the United States alone, nearly one-quarter of the national waste stream each year comes from the construction industry. So how can we fix this and be more proactive about diverting from landfills and reducing the negative environmental impacts that our industry creates? One of the most effective strategies for waste diversion begins long before the first shovel hits the ground. By implementing diversion strategies during the planning stages of a project, construction companies can significantly minimize the amount of waste we generate. At Volpatt construction we call this thinking “Dumpster Last” and use selective demolition strategies as a key component in waste diversion during the planning phases of construction. Prior to major demolition, we collaborate with organizations like Construction Junction (CJ) and Doors Unhinged (DH) to create an inventory of materials, furniture, and other items that can be reused, recycled, and diverted from the landfill. Post demolition, CJ and DH reports back the total amount of waste (in pounds) that have been diverted. Not only do we provide those numbers to project owners, we also track waste diversion and share that data with our team at large so they understand the positive impact they’ve made on the environment. Let’s all be on a mission to think more strategically about how we reuse and recycle items that would otherwise create unnecessary trash. Join us and embrace dumpster last as a an overall industry standard when it comes to construction and demolition. Hit us up if you'd like to know more. You can also join us tomorrow (June 18th from 6-8) at Duquesne Club along with The Green Voice for a panel discussion building material reuse and waste diversion. https://lnkd.in/erFqz3UR
