At Volo Mission, we encourage and support women in all industries/professions and especially in the helicopter external load / aerial firefighting sector. As our team begins training today in Brazil, we take this opportunity to embrace celebrating International Women’s Day and how far women have come in aviation. Congratulations to Katrin Doederer for being awarded the Long Line Vertical Reference Whirly Girl Scholarship! As one of the rare female utility pilots in the Australian bush, Katrin earned this scholarship with her impressive 2,000 hours of total time and 1,850 PIC, mainly flying the Bell 206 Jetranger. Her passion for aerial surveying, aerial incendiary, and animal conservation work has taken her around the vast Central Australian Deserts where she has proven to be a safe and professional pilot. Her commitment to breaking into the aviation industry and pursuing a career in flying external loads and aerial firefighting is truly inspiring. The Texas-based Volo Mission, LLC team recently collaborated with the Cyprus Police Air Unit (CPAU) to provide re-current and initial aerial firefighting training for their pilots and aircrews. Based at Larnaca Airport, CPAU operates a fleet of Bell 412s and Leonardo AW139s, engaging in diverse missions such as aerial firefighting, search and rescue, as well as its usual law enforcement activities. The AW139s utilise 100’ long lines with Bambi Buckets for firefighting, while the Bell 412s employ belly hooking with the Water Hog bucket system.
