#Volkert100 | Boredelonville Floodgate Built between 1929 and 1931, the Bordelonville Floodgate was a key component of the Mississippi River and Tributaries program, which was part of the Flood Control Act of 1928. This important infrastructure project was designed to divert potential floodwaters from the Atchafalaya River in Louisiana away from populated areas and direct them into adjacent water bodies, helping to protect communities from flooding. In recognition of its historical significance, the Bordelonville Floodgate was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, further solidifying its place in engineering history. Stay tuned as we continue to highlight the milestones and achievements that have shaped Volkert’s legacy over the past 100 years. #Volkert100 #ThisisVolkert #VolkertHistory #100YearsStrong #EngineeringLegacy

关于我们
Volkert’s history began in 1925 when it was founded in New Orleans as Doullut & Erwin to provide waterfront and heavy construction services, as well as airport design services beginning in 1927. During World War II, the company contributed to the design and construction of U.S. Navy shipyards for the production of “Liberty Ships” as well as dry docks and self-operating steel and wood docks for the war effort. Following the war, the firm relocated to Mobile, Alabama where it was headed by David Volkert. Volkert acquired the company in 1954 and led its involvement in the design of the U.S. interstate highway system, the largest civil engineering project in history, in nine southeastern states and the District of Columbia. Renamed for Volkert in 1963, and under his leadership, the firm has expanded to provide a wide range of design services in transportation, aviation, construction, public works and utilities, property acquisition, and environmental engineering. Through its accomplished history, Volkert has earned over 60 major engineering awards as well as several inductions into the Engineering Hall of Fame. Volkert is now the largest Alabama-based engineering company and is ranked in the top quartile of the nation’s Top 500 Design Firms. Today, Volkert is listed among the top 1% of engineering companies in the United States and our commitment to serving our clients, our communities, and our nation with excellence is as steadfast as it was over ninety years ago.

In March 2025, Traci Williams, CCM, Program Manager at Volkert, was honored by Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin as one of the city’s StrongHer candidates, a program he launched to celebrate and elevate women making a difference in Birmingham. Now in its fifth year, the StrongHer campaign highlights women who are breaking barriers and creating lasting change in their communities. Volkert is proud to celebrate Traci Williams, a leader who has helped shape Birmingham’s infrastructure for over 20 years. Growing up in Birmingham, Traci was drawn to building and problem-solving, which led her to study engineering and later earn a BS degree in Building Science from Auburn University. After gaining experience in construction, Traci joined Volkert, where she has managed over $1 billion in projects that have transformed the city. She has played a key role in major projects such as the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport - BHM expansion and the Birmingham Xpress Bus Rapid Transit System. The BRT project was especially meaningful to her, as its East Terminus Station was built near the neighborhood where she grew up. Traci is also a founding board member of The Brilliant Black Girl Collective, helping to raise scholarship funds for Black female high school seniors in Birmingham. “I was one of those kids who believed the teachers when they said you can be anything you want to be. It was important for me to give back to little Black girls like me," says Williams. 🔗 Read more on our insights page here: https://loom.ly/g9GSl9E #ThisisVolkert #EmployeeSpotlight

#Volkert100 | Bonnet Carre Spillway Shortly after the company’s founding, the Great Flood of 1927 prompted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin one of the largest civil engineering projects in U.S. history, the Mississippi River and Tributaries Project. Our firm’s contribution to this effort included designing the foundations for the Bonnet Carré Spillway. The spillway, located about twelve miles upriver from New Orleans, is made up of a complex system of floodgates that were constructed to help manage floodwater from the Mississippi River. Nearly a century after its construction, the spillway remains a vital piece of infrastructure that continues to protect the region by diverting potential floodwaters into Lake Pontchartrain. #Volkert100 #ThisisVolkert #VolkertHistory #100YearsStrong #EngineeringLegacy
