When you talk about something for a long time, it’s easy to forget that what feels like common knowledge to you might be truly transformative for someone else. I was reminded of this while leading my workshop,?"Surviving the Headlines", at the Voices - European Festival of Journalism and Media Literacy in?Zagreb?last week. The first clue was the lack of space to accommodate everyone who wanted to join. I've now done over a dozen of these workshops over 3 continents. And while they follow the same logic, each was made unique by journalists speaking about emotional situations they face. This time, it was the anger at #discrimination, frustration at #censorship and metrics-based approaches in newsrooms, anxiety that comes from the #impostorsyndrome?as well as responsibilities towards the sources and the public, exhaustion of multitasking... The best part of doing these workshops for me is hearing from the participants afterward. Several shared that they felt?heard?and?validated?in a way they hadn’t experienced before. It is both humbling and exciting to see how these conversations resonate - many mentioned that they were already planning to bring these ideas back to their newsrooms to create healthier and more sustainable environments - for themselves, their colleagues, and journalism. This was #Voices in general - a celebration of journalism, its professionals and its role in societies, with a healthy critical inward look and a good degree of introspection. Kudos to the entire organisational team, and especially to the superheroines of the Festival - Iva Nenadic and Maja Sever????????? See you at the next one! "They are not interested in old stories, egos, or unnecessary rivalries. They are here because they understand the power and significance of #journalism in a democratic society." One of the most special aspects of #Voices2025 in Zagreb? The coverage, presence, and involvement of students from Croatia and Televizija Student Here's how they experienced it ???? https://lnkd.in/dDahmEX3

And just like that, #Voices2025 comes to an end! Three days to reflect on how independent #information is not something to take for granted. Three days to acknowledge the price and effort it takes to uncover the truth. Three days to celebrate and recognise #journalists and #media advocates who dedicate themselves to this mission——sometimes protecting the way of life we know, and in other cases, fighting for the society many long for. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this possible! ?? https://voicesfestival.eu/

"It takes months for an #InvestigativeJournalist to connect the dots and reach conclusions, yet we expect to access their work instantly, clicking on an article and reading it for free in a minute." Therese Comodini Cachia ?? Maybe it's time we reflect on this as a society. To what extent are we willing to do something so we are not surrounded by disinformation? Before the evening programme, we're having a fascinating discussion on investigative journalism in #Croatia and the #Balkans—a field that requires special initiative, goes the extra mile, and moves beyond simply reporting how people react to facts. ?? This discussion explored how digital technology and AI can drive sustainability, the mindset shifts needed for responsible use, and the media's role in shaping behaviors for a better future. ?? In the era of rapid technological advancement, we need to talk more about ethical innovation to have a truly sustainable and inclusive future. Thanks to Paolo Celot , EAVI - Media Literacy for Citizenship; Lee Hibbard, Council of Europe; Antonio Lopez, John Cabot University and Boris Joki? for their insightful inputs. ?? ?? The person behind the job, that's what you see if you talk face to face beyond the stage or a conference. This morning, we had the honour to hear powerful testimonies from Georgine Kellermann, Marc Marginedas, Du?an Milju?, Mortaza BEHBOUDI, and Aksana Brovach, during the #LivingStories session to explore the concept of safety in #journalism. "It is extremely important to understand that this is not just a job; it is a mission," said Iva Nenadic during the introduction. ??Aksana Brovach: "My main message to you is be a voice, not an echo. I am a voice for my colleagues in Belarus, where 40 journalists are in prison. Their only 'crime'—doing their job (...) Dictatorships want silence, but we must be vocal and visible." ??Du?an Milju?: "I remember some advice from the police and prosecutors after my attack: 'The mafia does not forgive and does not forget your work. If they can take revenge after 10 or 15 years, they will.' So we must be very careful..." More on this final day of the #Voices2025: https://voicesfestival.eu/
