We were thrilled to welcome Eva Maria Lewis as a guest speaker at our February Youth Power Collective Cross Country Community Session. Eva’s session was divinely aligned and on-time; she gave young people the space to dream together as they consider their response to issues in their community. Thank you!
Vocal Justice

We position youth who are proximate to injustice as leaders for social change.
关于我们
We designed a unique, research-informed culturally affirming public speaking program that provides Black and Brown high school students with a safe space to (1) reflect on and share their personal stories, (2) learn about the causes and consequences of oppression, and (3) practice talking about social justice in ways that are true to who they are and persuasive to their intended audiences. Rather than targeting “high-achieving” students of color, we intentionally focus on those who feel disengaged in school. These students have incredible ideas on how to change the world, precisely because the status quo has failed them. They deserve a space to cultivate their voice and be heard. Our program teaches public speaking with a critical lens. Students learn how some persuasion tactics (e.g., respectability politics and “poverty porn”) can be counter to a long-term justice agenda, even if they are “effective” at getting buy-in in the short-term. Ultimately, Vocal Justice goes beyond building students’ confidence and communication skills to building their critical consciousness.

Our final stop in Atlanta was to Southwest Dekalb High School to visit Ms. Rowe and her students. They shared their 'They Say, I Say' poems demonstrated an incredible amount of vulnerability and self-reflection during their interviews. We were honored to be witnesses to their stories. Enjoy these stills from our visit. Interviews will be available on our Archive of Youth Voice and Power soon.

We visited Dunwoody High School in Atlanta to see what Ms. Phillips and the Youth Power Collective were up to! They hosted a Black Table Talk with us to share their thoughts about the world, the new administration's impact on them as young people and Vocal Justice as a nonprofit, and what issue they're thinking of addressing through the collective. The final episode was shot and edited by Jaden, a VJ alum. We'll share it here when it's out. Drop a ?? if you plan to tune in!

Watch til' the end! ??? Vocal Justice is needed in ALL of our schools and you can donate at the link in the comments. Trump is TRYING to erase our historical memory with the stroke of a pen, because he knows the power we possess when we remember us historically. When we know who we are, what we’ve been through, and what we’ve accomplished, we feel compelled to replicate that and speak up! So, what do we do when his example of leadership trickles down to our states and local school boards? We fight back by implementing curriculums that teach our kids their history and how to advocate for themselves. Organizations like Vocal Justice are already doing this and ready to step up to the plate to help educators and students create the world that we all want moving forward with a curriculum rooted in progressive principles. ???? During times like this when grants and funding are uncertain for many non-profits, due to the current administration, every single dollar that you donate to organizations focused on providing services to our community counts. ??If you’d like to donate to Vocal Justice, be sure to visit the link below or check out their page. #blackhistory #trump #vocaljustice #donate #ushistory #hatecrime #racism #antiracism #school #educators #teacher #dei
