A year ago, we started our journey at MIT100K from the PITCH to the LAUNCH grand finale. Witnessing the remarkable innovation and passion displayed by the next generation of tech leaders was truly inspiring. These talented students showcased groundbreaking ideas spanning various sectors, from healthcare to sustainability. The standout winner: MabLab Skye Lam Vienna Sparks @Manish C., a healthcare startup from Harvard University & Columbia University. Their pivotal work in creating rapid tests to detect laced drugs and spiked drinks reflects a deep commitment to saving lives. Last month, my abstract was selected from over 100 submissions to present a session of my ongoing Master’s capstone research at the Harvard African Health Conference at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. My research focuses on the responsible deployment of Large Language Models (LLMs) in healthcare for low-resource settings, focusing on underrepresented languages, constrained hardware, and cultural nuances. Following a developed framework, the project builds a use case for an LLM-powered automated Electronic Medical Record (EMR) entry system to help physicians attend to more patients, especially critical in regions like Ghana, where the doctor-patient ratio can reach 1:65,000. The system listens to consultations in a local language, transcribes them, and automates EMR entry using a medically fine-tuned model, reducing administrative burdens and ensuring faster and more accurate health record-keeping anchored to local contexts. I had the privilege of co-presenting with Dr. Maame Ama Gyaa Anim, who has firsthand experience tackling these challenges in Ghana. It was an honor to place second in the competition! We had an absolute blast at SXSW 2025, reconnecting with alumni, catching up with student founders, and meeting new people in the Austin startup ecosystem. Here are a few highlights from our trip: - We had an inspiring time getting to know the inKind team (a former i-lab venture) and touring their space. inKind is transforming restaurant financing by offering upfront capital to restaurants in exchange for food and beverage credits, which are then sold to consumers through the inKind app. inKind's model helps restaurants grow while giving diners access to exclusive perks. - We hosted alumni and student mixers at several restaurants in the inKind network, including The Well, The Ember, and Swift’s Attic thanks to great restaurant recommendations from Jonathan de Wolff (HKS' 22, Chief Sustainability Officer at inKind). - We captured four incredible ventures pitching at SXSW: Vocadian, MabLab, Stressie, and Rarefied Technologies. Huge congratulations to MabLab for winning first place in the SXSW Pitch Contest! MabLab is developing 5-in-1 test strips to detect the deadliest lacing agents in recreational drugs. We were also thrilled to celebrate Stressie securing second place at the TechMex Austin pitch competition at Capital Factory. Stressie focuses on?helping people cope with stress by combining smart detection, insightful tracking, and personalized interventions. A big shoutout to all the i-lab ventures that pitched and participated at SXSW! - We attended excellent SXSW sessions, including a panel featuring Margaret L. Richardson (GoFundMe), Angelique Albert (Native Forward Scholars Fund), and Sarah Haacke Byrd (Women Moving Millions). The discussion touched on the largest generational wealth transfer in history as well as the impact of investing in women, not just empowering them but paying them. - We had the chance to meet with Amy Webb, a renowned futurist and CEO of the Future Today Strategy Group. We spoke with Webb about her annual Tech Trend Report that was released at SXSW. Downloaded over 1 million times each year, this report provides data-driven insights and helps people navigate the evolving technological landscape. We also connected with Darryl Campbell at his book signing for his new book, "Fatal Abstraction: Why the Managerial Class Loses Control of Software." - We hosted a women's brunch on International Women’s Day. We were thrilled to bring together a powerhouse group of innovators, investors, and founders from the i-lab and Harvard network to celebrate women in entrepreneurship.
