?? Rivers are the Earth’s conveyor belts, supporting the highest rate of biodiversity compared to any other ecosystem and providing for the livelihoods of millions of peoples. But rivers all over the world face challenges: efforts to reclaim land, improvements for navigation, and attempts to eradicate malaria are a few examples. Solutions to river challenges should harness the natural functionality of them and optimize the natural services they provide. ?? On this #InternationalDayofActionforRivers we bring to you global NBS projects that are adaptive and long-term solutions?to river challenges: https://lnkd.in/dt7Q-vt ?? ? arvoreagua #NatureBasedSolutions

???Restoring Nature, Restoring Ourselves??? Every project we take on—whether a stream restoration or mitigation bank—is a reminder of the privilege we have to do this work. For 25 years, we’ve been helping restore ecosystems across the U.S., bringing degraded streams and wetlands back to life. Beyond the technical challenges and ecological impact, what truly makes this work special are the people. Landowners invested in conservation, designers who pour creativity and precision into every detail, contractors who navigate the complexities of restoration with expertise, and the incredible partners and colleagues we collaborate with daily. With every foot of stream and acre of wetland restored, we’re not just repairing landscapes—we’re contributing to a healthier future for both people and the planet. Looking forward to sharing final updates on this project soon! #EcologicalRestoration #StreamRestoration #MitigationBanking #SustainableDevelopment #EnvironmentalStewardship #ConservationLeadership #RestorationIndustry

Healthy #wetlands play an essential role as a habitat for biodiversity that can help to adapt to climate change. Mediterranean wetlands are critical habitats for migratory birds. However, they are threatened by human pressure, reducing their capacity to preserve biodiversity. via Wetland-based Solutions

Liver of the River.. What makes a river healthy? thoughts on stream and river restoration. Ever heard of the hyporheic zone? "The hyporheic zone—a crucial but often overlooked part of aquatic ecosystems—is a hidden layer of stones and sediment beneath river, stream, or creek beds that extends beyond the banks. Rich with tiny organisms, it nourishes waterways with essential nutrients and filters out pollutants, functioning like a river’s liver or gut. In urban environments, straightening waterways and reinforcing banks can severely damage this zone, leaving the stream unhealthy or unable to thrive. Surface water infiltrates the hyporheic zone, where it blends with groundwater rising from below. This slow-moving exchange regulates stream temperatures, buffering against extremes of heat and cold. Rainfall and occasional flooding beyond the banks help recharge both the hyporheic zone and the surrounding groundwater, preserving its vital ecological role." -Scientific America, Erica Gies This article is a great weekend read about how important and underappreciated the hyporheic zone is when it comes to stream and river function and the implication for restoration work.
