Innovative solutions for Bio-based industries to shift towards circular economy

关于我们

VIVALDI project will develop an innovative, sustainable and cost-efficient biotechnological solution to convert off-gas emissions from Bio-based Industries into CO2-based chemicals. In this way, the industry’s greenhouse gases emissions will not only be reduced but will be used as a novel feedstock, lowering the dependency on fossil fuels import and the exploitation of key resources such as energy, raw material, freshwater and land.

On November 14, our colleague Zainab Ul Kausar, PhD candidate at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), a consortium partner in the VIVALDI project, presented her research at #VEUS2024, UAB’s science outreach event. In a 10-minute talk titled “Transforming CO?: From Waste to Resource”, Zainab introduced part of her innovative work within the VIVALDI project. She showcased how science can unlock CO?’s potential, turning it from a waste product into a valuable resource for producing sustainable bioplastics. While industrial application remains a challenge for the future, this research marks an exciting step toward a greener, more sustainable world. ?? We’re proud to see the VIVALDI project featured in a platform that encourages critical thinking and fosters a connection between science and society. Stay tuned for the full recording of Zainab’s talk, which will soon be available on UAB’s YouTube channel. ?? We’re happy to announce the publication of a new scientific article by the talented team at our project partner Leitat Technological Center: Gerard Pérez, Jorge L., Pau Bosch, Eduard Borràs, and Sandra Martinez! The article "Free-Standing Carbon Nanofiber Films with Supported Cobalt Phosphide Nanoparticles as Cathodes for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in a Microbial Electrolysis Cell" has been published in Nanomaterials MDPI as part of the Special Issue on Hydrogen Production and Evolution Based on Nanocatalysts. This study, done within the framework of the VIVALDI project, presents remarkable laboratory results achieved through innovative materials development. The team crafted free-standing carbon nanofibers (CNFs) embedded with cobalt phosphide nanoparticles using the electrospinning technique. These advanced materials were immediately used as electrodes for the #hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in lab-scale bio-electrochemical reactors. The results demonstrated: ? Low overpotentials ? Excellent electrochemical stability ? High nanoporosity, conductivity, and large surface area Such attributes make these materials a promising step forward in the field of hydrogen generation and sustainable energy production. ?? Congratulations to the authors for their contribution to advancing #nanomaterials and renewable energy technologies! ?? Last week, Tudy Bernier, Policy Director at CO2 Value Europe and a partner in the VIVALDI project, was invited to speak at the Materials for Sustainable Development Conference (#MATSUS Fall 2024)! The conference, hosted by école polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL, organized diverse sessions on technologies for future materials. One of the highlights was a two-day session on “Advances in (Photo)Electrochemical CO2 Conversion to Chemicals and Fuels”, where researchers from universities, RTOs, and innovative companies showcased their work on CO2 reduction. In this session, Tudy presented policy recommendations from the VIVALDI project to support the adoption of alternative carbon feedstock and to help Europe transition away from fossil fuels. His key points included: ?? Rewarding the reuse of captured carbon to encourage circular approaches. ? Simplifying approvals for innovative technologies to facilitate their deployment. ?? Boosting demand for sustainable products to support market uptake. We thank Adriano Sacco from Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia for the kind invitation to join this important discussion. This engagement highlights VIVALDI’s ongoing efforts to combine research insights with policy recommendations to drive progress in the sustainable use of carbon. On October 17, at the 1st MIBITECH Day held at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, our colleague and VIVALDI consortium partner, Paniz Izadi, presented the project’s work on bio|electrochemical CO? conversion through her plenary lecture "Advancing bio|electrochemical CO? conversion for synthesis of high-value products." Her presentation outlined the VIVALDI approach, which focuses on the concept of electrobiorefineries that convert CO? into high-value products, contributing to sustainable production solutions. The event brought together around 50 researchers from the seven research groups within the UFZ’s Department of Microbial #Biotechnology. The day included keynotes, presentations, and a poster session, creating an engaging environment for sharing advances across areas such as metabolic engineering, ecothermodynamics, and anaerobic #microbiology. #MIBITECH Day highlighted the potential of cross-disciplinary insights to drive biotechnology forward, particularly in areas targeting sustainable processes for environmental impact. ??

At the IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition 2024, our partner Isle Utilities led an impactful workshop on “Boosting the Adoption of Innovation in the Water Sector,” co-chaired by Blanca Antizar and Elvira Serra, PhD. The session focused on advancing a #circulareconomy in water management and was enriched by a distinguished panel and highly engaging roundtable discussions. Our colleague Juan Antonio Baeza from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, joined the panel to introduce the VIVALDI project! He highlighted the power of partnerships between universities, industry, investors, and policymakers to drive water start-up growth and innovation. Collaborative projects like VIVALDI are critical in transferring knowledge, raising technology readiness levels, and using the EVT (Evaluation and Verification Testing) process to validate the superiority of emerging technologies over existing solutions. The #WWCE2024 was the perfect background for such discussion. The dynamic hub gathered stakeholders across and beyond the traditional water sector. From urban water services to experts in agriculture, industry, architecture, soil, hydrology, ICT, finance, and social science, it's a unique platform for multidisciplinary exchange to advance water #innovation and #sustainability.
