As we wrapped nurses week last week, it was a privilege to join in the American Heart Association “Go Red for Women” luncheon. We took some of our outstanding women leaders to the event, but more importantly, we were accompanied by 2 of our staff who are survivors of heart disease. We are thrilled to support this campaign and the health of women everywhere! Let’s stamp out heart disease! #hearthealth

They say friendship can enrich your life and improve your health. For one of our Tennova Cleveland family members, Dusty Vaughn, it was a friend who saved his life and improved her health along the way. Dusty was born premature and had one damaged kidney. After suffering with kidney disease for 35 years, Dusty was added to the transplant list and the search for a match began. Over the next several months, multiple family members were tested but none were a match. Then Debbie, a close friend of Dusty’s, reached out about being tested to see if she could possibly help. Within a few weeks, evaluations were completed and Debbie was a perfect match! According to Dusty, Debbie was so excited that she informed Dusty of their match before the transplant team. Although the news was amazing, there was one issue – Debbie needed to get herself healthier in order to donate. To help her friend, Debbie completely focused on her health, shed approximately 50 pounds, and the transplant was able to take place. Dusty’s procedure had some issues, but he is now completely recovered and is almost 7 years out from the transplant. “The challenges of the whole situation honestly did a lot to help me grow in my faith, patience, and empathy for others,” said Dusty. His journey is also what inspired him to go into the medical field and Debbie’s journey is what has allowed him to share his story. As we close Donate Life Month, please consider being that friend who would give the gift of life! Celebrating Community College Month – Community Partner Tennova Healthcare- Cleveland Cleveland State partners with Tennova to provide training and clinical hours for student nurses. Educating and training future nurses for the community is a mission for the college and the hospital. More than 50 student nurses from Cleveland State receive clinical training at Tennova each year, and many are hired at the hospital in the Nurse Extern Program which began last year. In the program, nursing students are hired by the hospital to assist patients and perform a variety of patient care tasks under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The students gain experience in multiple departments, work a flexible schedule around their college classes and earn a part-time income to help with expenses. Before graduation, the externs can interview for full-time RN positions with different departments at Tennova. Kim Reddish, Chief Nursing Officer at Tennova, supervises 700 hospital employees including 400 nurses, and she oversees the Nurse Extern Program. “My goal here is to make sure that we have excellent clinical care,” said Reddish. “The way that we do that is to have partnerships with clinical and academic institutions around us like Cleveland State. We want to support students and the college by helping build clinical knowledge and mentorships so students who come from Cleveland State can be employed here as well.” A native of Englewood, Tennessee, Miranda Shelton will graduate from the Cleveland State nursing program in May. She is part of the Nurse Extern Program at Tennova and will begin working as a nurse in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) at Tennova after graduation. “I chose the Cleveland State nursing program because I wanted to attend a school that would allow me to have the highest chance of success in achieving my dream career. I have family members and friends who have also attended Cleveland State,” said Shelton. “Tennova’s Nurse Extern Program has helped me in many ways. Prior to starting the program, I had no healthcare experience. Having the opportunity to work at Tennova as a student has allowed me to relate what I have learned in the classroom to the real world. After seeing things be put into practice at work, I was able to get a better grasp on the concepts that I was learning in school.” Read the full story at https://lnkd.in/eg2irSPG
