The START Method T: TALK TO SOMEONE ?? Most companies offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). You are likely eligible to obtain free counseling sessions at no charge. ?? If you do not have access to free sessions, many providers offer affordable rates. ?? Talking to family members or friends may help initially, but it can be taxing and overwhelming for them. They want to help, but most do not know how to help. If you are experiencing burnout at extreme levels, talk to a licensed counselor or therapist ASAP. They can help you sort through your situation as you create a plan for your next steps. ??

The START Method R: REST AND TAKE BREAKS ?? Set a bedtime that allows you to get enough sleep every night. Most adults need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep. (Extreme burnout may require more.) ?? Try to maintain the same bedtime throughout your workweek and weekends/days off to keep your sleep schedule consistent. ?? Start taking more breaks throughout the day. Set a reminder to take a 15 minute break in the morning and afternoon. Do not skip your lunch break. Take a 20-30 minute break after work to decompress. Naps are not just for babies and toddlers. Power naps can help boost your energy and improve your focus. ??

The START Method A: ASK FOR HELP ?? Review each item from yesterday’s list(s). Consider who can complete each task instead of you. ?? Can any of your upcoming or reoccurring tasks be reassigned to someone else (permanently or temporarily)? ?? Schedule a day and time to meet with management, colleagues, and/or family members to discuss what is needed from them to help you. You won’t be able to delegate everything. Taking a few major responsibilities off your list will definitely help. *Do you feel like you can’t ask for help? An upcoming post will address this in more detail. Stay tuned! ??

The START Method T: TAKE INVENTORY ?? Create a list of everything you need to handle this week. ?? You may need separate lists for work and home/personal related responsibilities. ?? Make sure you aren’t forgetting anything. If so, add it to the list. We’ll explain what to do with the list(s) tomorrow. ??

The START Method S: SELF-CARE ?? Come up with at least 1 self-care need that you have been neglecting. ?? Figure out what time of the day works best for you. ?? Do it every day. It can be as simple as: ?? Reading something inspirational ?? Stretching and/or exercising ?? Pampering yourself with a skincare routine ?? Listening to your favorite song or playlist ?? Meditating ?? Writing in a journal Whatever it is, it needs to be something you choose to do every day for YOU!??
