?? Calling Oakland Artists and Activists! ? ?????? There are a huge number of things happening TOMORROW at Oakland's 3:30PM City Council Meeting. The City Council will be voting to approve the City Administrator's recommendations to cut the Arts and Culture funding within the General Purpose Fund. There are also a number of housing-related items on the agenda. We encourage you to *show up*, submit an e-comment, or call your rep and demand that they keep our already piece meal arts funding. As we all know, this will be a critical hit to all arts organizations and artists. Those who will especially suffer are those already suffering, our struggling, Trans, disabled, BIPOC artists. Another exciting staff welcome: Vital arts is pleased to welcome our new Intern Nimir Saif! Learn more about Nimir below. Nimir Saif is a shape-shifter, creative, and community weaver. Nimir is the co-founder of arwah collective, a queer and trans south asian creative coalition that holds teach-ins and fundraisers for students and trans folks under militant occupation in Kashmir. They are committed to building networks of care and disruption, and unearthing forms of healing for themselves and one another.

Vital Arts is excited to welcome Maryela Perez, our new Program and Operations Coordinator! Learn more about Maryela below! Maryela Perez is a cultural worker, visual artist, and DJ based in Oakland, CA. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish Literature from UC Santa Cruz and is actively involved in the Bay Area arts community. Previously, Maryela served as the Curator and Public Programs Manager at MACLA in San Jose, where she focused on creating safe spaces for community members and supporting artists with valuable resources. She is passionate about uplifting artists in the community and facilitating resources to the artist community. Maryela is also a member of the art collective Velvet Cloud Radio and Chulita Vinyl Club’s Bay Area chapter.

We know voting can feel like a hard thing to do in these complex and often devastating times.
