We believe thoughtfully facilitated discussions of art make education more engaging, inclusive, and equitable.
关于我们
Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) transforms the way students think and learn by providing training and curriculum for people to facilitate discussions of visual art that significantly increase student engagement, performance, and enjoyment of learning. We train educators to utilize the VTS method so that they are more effective in their own contexts and communities. Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is an educational non-profit that trains educators in schools, museums, and institutions of higher education to use a student-centered facilitation method to create inclusive discussions. Our intensive professional development programs provide individuals with the tools to become skilled facilitators of complex conversations. Our accessible classroom curricula are supportive of critical thinking, visual literacy, communication, and collaboration skills. VTS is much more than an art curriculum; as a facilitation method and professional development program that fosters collaborative, inclusive, community-building dialogue, VTS has the power to change the way we relate to one another as teachers, students, and colleagues. VTS is comprised of arts and education professionals that specialize in deep listening and responsive teaching practices; we are passionate about sharing what we have learned with others. For over 30 years, VTS has fostered reflective communities of practice in educational environments including classrooms, museums, and hospitals around the world. VTS is uniquely suited to support educators as they rise to meet the challenges and opportunities of a 21st century education.

Not knowing is a skill “I don't know" is a thought category in Abigail Housen's manual of all the things people say in front of artworks. Her research, which grew into VTS, lays out how comments change as people spend more time looking at art. Interestingly, beginner viewers do not say "I don't know" in any form. They are certain about what they see. They list what's there, and if you ask for more, they state matter-of-factly, "that's all there is." Then, after months or years looking or doing VTS, suddenly viewers start saying "I don't know.." Not-knowing enters with practice. Similarly, with time spent looking, people ask more questions, and, surprising, don’t finish their sentences or garble them. (Do they rethink their idea mid-sentence? Are they seeing things they can’t put into words?) Housen's research doesn't answer why it happens, her research only documents that it does happen. Not knowing, questioning, and not finishing take time to learn. This culture may treat those responses as signs of ignorance, or lack, but research shows the opposite - they take work to learn. They are skills. Want to learn more surprising facts about the research behind VTS? Join us in the VTS Learning Milestones and Research class this February! Register at vtshome.org/events. 4 sessions: Feb 18, 20, 25, 27 |9 a.m. Pacific | Noon Eastern. #visualthinkingstrategies #aestheticdevelopment #visualliteracy #looking #vts #notknowing
