Today VC recognizes the significant contributions of Bayard Rustin. Bayard Rustin was a key human rights activist during the Civil Rights Movement. He helped organize the 1963 March on Washington and advised Martin Luther King Jr. on nonviolent resistance. Rustin was active in the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). From 1965–1979, he led the A. Philip Randolph Institute, working to integrate unions and promote African American membership. Rustin also engaged in humanitarian missions to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Haiti, and later advocated for LGBTQ+ rights and AIDS education. In 1986, he testified for New York's Gay Rights Bill, saying that "gay people are the new barometer for social change." Despite facing criticism for his sexuality, Rustin remained open about it, though his role in the Civil Rights Movement was often downplayed due to this discrimination. #BlackHistoryMonth?#LaborAndJustice?#OurHistory

Today VC recognizes the significant contributions of Dorothy Lee Bolden. Bolden, a lifelong domestic worker, took great pride in her profession, often stating that domestic workers are "counselors, doctors, and nurses" to the families they serve. Despite this, she noted that they were never recognized as part of the labor force. In the late 1940s, Bolden refused to stay late to wash dishes for her white employer, resulting in her being falsely declared insane by psychiatrists, a reflection of the systemic racism at the time. In the 1960s, Bolden worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to support domestic workers, who faced grueling 13-hour workdays for as little as $3.50. She spearheaded efforts to form a national union in 1968, improving wages, conditions, and worker solidarity. Bolden’s leadership helped raise wages by 33% and secure workers' compensation and Social Security rights for domestic workers. She also registered thousands of African Americans to vote, enhancing the lives of many in Atlanta. Bolden's efforts earned national recognition, leading to her appointment to an advisory committee on social services under the Nixon Administration. #BlackHistoryMonth?#LaborAndJustice?#OurHistory

VC recognizes Mary McLeod Bethune and her tireless efforts to empower Blacks through education and labor. Born during Reconstruction to parents who had been enslaved, Mary McLeod Bethune grew up walking five miles to a Presbyterian mission school where a teacher noticed her dedication and recommended her for a college scholarship—setting Bethune on a path to change her career and the world. In 1904, with $1.50 and five young students, the now-legendary Mary McLeod Bethune started a school for Black girls in Florida that became today’s Bethune-Cookman University. Two decades later, Bethune was elected as the first woman president of the National Association of Teachers in Colored Schools (NATCS), later renamed the American Teachers Association (ATA), which would eventually merge with the National Education Association to become the union we know today. After serving as the NATCS president, Bethune would be appointed director of African American Affairs by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and later founded the National Council of Negro Women. Throughout her life, Mary McLeod Bethune broke through boundaries and used her platform to advocate for Black and women workers. “I leave you a thirst for education. I leave you a respect for the use of power. I leave you faith. I leave you racial dignity. I leave you a desire to live harmoniously with your fellow men. I leave you, finally, a responsibility to our young people.” #BlackHistoryMonth?#LaborAndJustice?#OurHistory
