Connecting Communities Through Media Arts Since 1970

关于我们

Visual Communications' mission is to develop and support the voices of Asian American and Pacific Islander filmmakers and media artists who empower communities and challenge perspectives. Founded in 1970 by a group of pioneering independent filmmakers, Visual Communications Media (VC) has evolved from being the first Asian Pacific media arts center dedicated to the honest and accurate portrayals of the Asian American & Pacific Islander people and heritage, to an artistic development and resource center for media creators. Based in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, VC is a pioneer in the development of AAPI film, video, and media. The organization has created award-winning productions, nurtured and given voice to our youth and seniors, promoted new artistic talent, presented new cinema, and preserved our visual history. VC’s annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPFF) showcases important new work by established filmmakers, and supports local and national, emerging talent. The LAAPFF is the only festival of its kind, scope, caliber and reputation in Los Angeles that celebrates Asian American and international film. Over 8 days, the annual LAAPFF celebrates Asian American and global Asian filmmakers and media artists with a showcase of over 150 films from the Asian and Pacific Islander diaspora. The festival has an annual audience reaching over 25,000 individuals in attendance at its screenings, educational seminars, artist talks, and other special events. For almost five decades, VC has helped nurture filmmakers, artists, and actors in Hollywood, from directors Ang Lee, Wayne Wang, Jessica Yu and Justin Lin, to actors Pat Morita, John Cho, Randall Park, and Sandra Oh. VC continues to help promote the careers of Asian Pacific American talent as well as discover and nurture emerging talents. Today, VC continues to be a conduit for the Asian Pacific global communities to the American public through its numerous programs.

The third annual Hong Kong Generations of Cinema" successfully concluded over the weekend in Losa Angeles. Presented by LAAPFF and sponsored by our office, this year’s program focused on the theme of #Cantopop. Six #HongKong titles - "Rouge", "Days of Being Wild", "Happy Together", "July Rhapsody", "Anita" and "The Lyricist Wannabe" - from different decades highlighting the connection between music and storytelling were presented during the event on October 26-27. Delivering her remarks after a special reception on October 26, our director Ms Jacko Tsang said that the office was honored to work with Visual Communications, the organization behind LAAPFF, to bring the program to Southern California three years in a row. She expressed delight that the program had expanded from a one-day showcase to a two-day celebration of Hong Kong #cinema following the success of the first two years.?

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN FOR 2025-2026 ARMED WITH A CAMERA FELLOWSHIP ?? In the 22nd edition of the Armed With a Camera (AWC) Fellowship, we invite the next generation of Asian American & Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander artists to connect with our communities through the their creative works. This year's accompanying theme will surround the idea of "RE-ENVISIONING." We offer to the upcoming cohort to not only ruminate on the Past and the Present, but activate their contemporary perspectives to reshape and reimagine our Future. We empower these artists to use temporal space to interpret the theme and examine this word’s ability to transform the status quo, in their own vision. Artists may create short films using their archives as a resource and use this overarching idea as a point of creative departure. Visual Communications will work with the Fellows for 12-16 months (January 2025 - May 2026) with their projects premiering at VC Film Fest in May of 2026 (Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival). During the program, Fellows will be supported by mentors and advisors while creatively producing works to engage our communities. Each Fellow will receive a $2,500 personal stipend, in addition to a $2,500 project stipend to support the creation of their media works. ?? The deadline to apply is Saturday, October 19, 2024 @ 10PM (PDT) ?? vcmedia.org/awc
