As Tropical Storm Helene continues moving through the Carolinas Friday,?resident and visitor safety remains our top priority. North Carolina Department of Public Safety and transportation continue to monitor conditions to ensure safe travel. Residents and visitors are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in the Western part of the state due to widespread?flash flooding, landslides, damaging debris flows, slope failures, riverine flooding, high?winds, downed trees and power outages. Additional advisories for potential flooding, tornados and?high winds?extend throughout the state for much of Friday. Go to?ReadyNC.gov?for current conditions, warnings and watches.?DriveNC.gov provides updated information on highway conditions. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead to reconfirm their travel plans, including reservations with lodging providers, and heed any guidance from local officials. Our new digital guide highlights 15 amazing communities, which are also trailblazers when it comes to preserving natural spaces and making trails accessible for all.?Created through the Outdoor NC initiative?in?partnership with 15 trail towns across the state, our digital guide serves as a go-to resource for natural wonder,?outdoor?exploration and cultural?heritage experiences throughout North?Carolina. Within the guide you will find?links to a selection of trails, accessibility details, responsible recreation practices and trip tips from local experts for each of the?destinations. It also includes a map, a list of the seven Outdoor NC Leave No Trace principles, and an invitation to "join the movement” toward responsible travel and stewardship. The collection centers on a?new 8-part podcast featuring real stories of hauntings, unexplained phenomena, cryptid encounters and generational lore and?the new North Carolina Haunted Trail, which includes travel destinations across the state with known paranormal stories.
