Today, VNA of Ohio highlights Matt Sturm, an Occupational Therapist with 14 years of experience. Inspired by his personal recovery from a motor vehicle accident in his early 20s, Matt chose to pursue a career in occupational therapy. He finds joy in interacting with patients, helping them regain strength and functionality. Outside of work, Matt enjoys spending time with his family, including his husband and their two boxers. One of his most memorable moments at VNAO involves witnessing the incredible teamwork among social workers, therapists, nurses, and aides to support patients through challenging times. In celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, we shine a spotlight on Joel Bervell, a dynamic Ghanaian-American medical student and social media influencer, affectionately dubbed the “Medical Mythbuster.” With a massive following of over 760,000 on TikTok and Instagram, Bervell passionately educates his audience about health disparities, racial biases, and the often-overlooked history of medicine. Recognized as TikTok's top “Voice for Change” in 2021, he’s also been honored as a 2024 TED Fellow and a Forbes 30 Under 30 luminary. Bervell's academic journey took him through Yale University and Boston University, and he is currently pursuing his medical degree at Washington State University. He co-founded the Coug Health Academic Mentoring Program and Hugs for, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering high school leaders worldwide. As a co-founder and the first president of the National Medical Association, Boyd made significant strides in the medical field. Born in Pulaski, Tennessee, he earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College and quickly became a prominent figure in Nashville. His groundbreaking research on racial segregation in healthcare further cemented his legacy.
