Visit Lafayette - West Lafayette is the destination marketing organization for the Lafayette - West Lafayette, Indiana area. It's mission is to market and promote the area as a visitor destination for conventions, meetings, leisure and sports travel, working collaboratively with other entities to enhance local economic development. he Visitors Center services the needs of local residents, newcomers and visitors to the community. The Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette offices are housed in the Lafayette-West Lafayette Visitors Center, located at 301 Frontage Road, Lafayette, Indiana 47905. This convenient location is just steps from Interstate 65 at exit #172 and State Road 26 E. In Tippecanoe County, there are 30+ lodging facilities with over 2,700 hotel rooms, over 400 restaurants and a variety of attractions. Among those attractions are Purdue University; the nationally recognized Tippecanoe Battlefield landmark; Wolf Park; Fort Ouiatenon, where the area’s largest festival, the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, is held; the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette; a vibrant downtown, filled with public art and galleries, historic architecture, the restored 1882 courthouse, Riehle Plaza and a pedestrian/bicycle bridge over the Wabash River, where many festivals and events are held; historic neighborhoods; The Farm at Prophetstown and Prophetstown State Park. The Visitors Center provides a wealth of brochures and information about things to see and do in Tippecanoe County as well as other Indiana attractions.   • February 19th is Destination Professionals Day! Destinations International chose this date to commemorate the founding of the first destination marketing organization in Detroit, Michigan, in 1896. Since then, destination marketing organizations have expanded worldwide. Today, more than 10,000 destination organizations— like Visit Lafayette – West Lafayette (VLWL), work to promote and manage destinations. Established in 1978, VLWL enhances the area’s quality of life for both visitors and residents through a combination of marketing, tourism development, and community engagement. As the strategic leader in promoting and developing the travel and visitor industry, VLWL markets the area as a premier destination through its website, social media, and advertising efforts. The impact of these efforts is evident: a recent study found that tourism in Tippecanoe County generated $626.6 million in visitor spending, contributed $353.1 million in net new economic value, and supported 8,397 jobs, including 6,840 direct positions. These jobs provided a total of $207.5 million in wages, demonstrating tourism’s vital role in the local economy.     This week, my HTM 162 Introduction to Event and Meeting Planning Industry class talked about Chapter 3–DMOs and DMCs. We were incredibly excited and fortunate to have some special guests: President & CEO Jo Wade, Director of Partnerships and CRM?Ashley Gregory, and Director of Sales and DEI?Gabriela Espinoza from our local DMO Visit Lafayette - West Lafayette join us. ?? Our students learned beyond the theory we discussed in class and understood how it actually works in the industry. Our lovely guests even brought candy and brochures, making the experience both informative and fun! It’s always valuable to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry practice. Responsibilities include managing customer service programs, training and mentoring Visitor Information Specialists, and coordinating a variety of visitor services and projects.
