In another substantial contribution to the #Suricata community, the Stamus Networks technical team recently completed an important research project to push the performance limits of Suricata. Dubbed "Suricata Extreme Performance Tuning" or "SepTun Mark III", the team set out to uncover and overcome performance bottlenecks - at the NIC, CPU, HW, Suricata version, Rules, OS and others - that would impact detection and monitoring at speeds at 400 Gbps and beyond. At this level of line rate new challenges arise not just for Suricata itself but also for the whole environment. Everything matters, including finding and fixing one bottle neck that enables another. Often enough performance tools will give a hint of whether the challenge is in the HW level or Suricata/Software level. We will share deep dive routines that helped us find, report, and fix bottlenecks in Suricata. Suricata has plenty of firepower to offer in terms of running modes — af-packet, af-xdp, af-ebpf DPDK, and vendor specific NIC modes for which we will share our findings and how they contribute to the quality of the data produced by Suricata. Now LIVE at #SuriCon24 - Markus Kont is sharing his research on the "ridiculously rich SMB data provided by #suricata" ...?and threat detection without rules using Suricata In his talk, Markus shares samples of malicious event flows seen during live fire cyber exercises. And in addition to it's use in Lateral Movement detection, he is presenting some opportunities for traffic profiling and anomaly detection, such as extracting useful features from SMB traffic and performing simple graph analytics. Suricata handles SMB flows differently from most NSM tools. That’s because SMB is actually a ridiculously powerful remote management protocol and is not limited to file sharing. In fact, Suricata takes the concept of flow correlation to the extreme for the SMB protocol, and logs every single SMB function as separate EVE events. To put this into perspective, an HTTP event creates a single EVE record that can be correlated with Flow, Fileinfo, Alert, and possibly few other protocols. SMB on the other hand starts with protocol version negotiation, followed by NTLM authentication, and then proceeds with actual function calls such as file access, named pipe creation, ioctl commands, or even DCERPC remote management calls. Thus, a single SMB flow can produce thousands of SMB events that all share event type, flow ID, and even a SMB session ID.
