Pro tip — ask your camera vendor for the EMVA 1288 report before making your next purchase! Here’s why. Unlike basic ISO ratings, EMVA 1288 lets you make a truly informed and scientific decision about your high-speed camera. To get started, you’ll need your vendor to supply an EMVA 1288 report and compare the following specifications: ? Saturation capacity or full web capacity: How many photons your sensor can handle before overexposure. ? Dynamic range: Ratio between the max pixel signal measurable to the lowest signal resolvable. ? Absolute sensitivity threshold: Number of photons required for a pixel to generate a signal that is equal to the noise. ? Signal to noise ratio: Relation between the signal and the noise produced within a pixel. For example, a sensor with a saturation capacity of 13,750 photons and a dynamic range of 611 will outperform one with 12,000p saturation capacity and 171 DR in challenging lighting conditions. Time to debunk a common misconception in camera tech: ISOsat 12232 isn’t the reliable measure of sensor sensitivity we once thought it was. Here’s the counterintuitive reality. A higher ISOsat value simply means your sensor saturates faster – but that tells us nothing about actual light sensitivity. What truly matters is how many electrons are generated per photon relative to sensor noise. For example, the video below compares two real sensors. Sensor 1, with its saturation capacity of 13,750 photons and low noise floor of 22 e-, actually outperforms Sensor 2 with its 12,000p saturation capacity and noise floor of 70 e-. Yet ironically, Sensor 2 would score a higher ISOsat rating simply because it saturates sooner. The takeaway? True sensor performance isn't about quick saturation – it's about efficient light conversion while maintaining low noise.
