Another wonderful AECOS (American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery) Winter meeting just wrapped up. Thought I’d share some takeaways…. #1 We need to transition away from calling LASIK, LASIK. We’re creating patient confusion around all of the various treatment types that treat refractive error. A shift to something broader like “Vision Correction Procedureâ€, which would include all options a surgeon offers, will reduce patient confusion. #2 Like it or not, AI is coming to our speciality. Front office, back office, clinics and surgery centers will all be using AI in some form. This is not an IF it’s coming, but HOW FAST. #3 The business of ophthalmology in the US is more challenging than ever. Many practices face similar challenges, whether PE backed, academic or independent. #4 Our collective voice is needed now in Washington DC. Contact your Congressmen, support PACs and participate in fly-in events. #5 Ophthalmology is facing a surgical capacity crisis. The issue of eye care providers working at top of their license is becoming increasingly important to meet patient care demands #6 Premium IOL conversion rates will not increase just because the technology has significantly improved. Patients need to be educated about options appropriate for them. #7 Thankfully, innovation and collaboration continues to be alive and well in ophthalmology. Ophthalmologists + Optometrists + Industry Innovators + Investment Community = Happy Patients and a bright future ahead for all.
