Surgical innovation through engineering

关于我们

Surgical Innovation Through Engineering. Interventional processes, devices, and systems are complex. The conception, development, realization, and evaluation of novel solutions require a tight interaction between several engineering disciplines and clinicians. This necessitates environments in which engineering teams and practitioners can interact and exchange ideas on a daily basis. Vanderbilt University’s strong history of and commitment to interdisciplinary work and the close proximity of its Medical and Engineering Schools makes it the ideal campus for advancing the state of the art in this field. The Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering provides a structure that facilitates this interdisciplinary work and creates an environment in which traditional boundaries are eliminated.

Nabil Simaan (Vanderbilt) and his coinvestigators, Michael Miga, Soheil Kolouri, Jie Ying Wu, and Kamran Idrees have developed a novel haptic trainer for teaching and evaluating laparoscopic surgical skills. Together with engineering and clinical collaborators Kyvia Pereira, Jon Heiselman, and Kauffmann Rondi they are moving the needle on accelerating skill acquisition and the objective assessment of surgical proficiencies.

We enjoyed hosting the Vanderbilt CBO team last week. On average, about 60% of patients with cancer will receive surgery at some time in their treatment. For many it may be their only option and in some cases surgery is curative. We design many technologies in VISE to perform surgery more accurately, more safely, and with the less disruption to the patient's life. It is just one thing we do. Thanks for spending time with our VISE community.

As chief business officers for various areas at Vanderbilt, we focus a lot on the dollars and cents of our operations, but we all work here because of our belief in the mission. Huge thanks to the team at the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering (https://lnkd.in/ervfr26e) for hosting our CBO team on Friday. Teaching us how tiny robotic devices are helping revolutionize surgical procedures really helps reinforce the impact for which we all work so hard. THANK YOU!

VISE on the Road! Graduate student, Jesse d'Almeida was the keynote speaker at the TransferA Congress for biomedical engineering students at Universidad Anáhuac Mayab in Mérida, Mexico. Jesse shared with them his exciting work in the MED Lab on surgical robotics and what research looks like across various levels. Jesse is known for his incredible speaking skills, so we knew his insights would be top-notch! What an amazing opportunity to inspire the next generation of biomedical engineers with his passion for robotics.

?? What an unforgettable experience! VISE was honored to host an exclusive early screening of 'Rule Breakers', an Angel Studios film. The movie tells the inspiring true story of the Afghan Dreamers, an all-female robotics team who defied incredible odds to compete on the global stage. These remarkable young women represent resilience, determination, and the power of breaking barriers. Opening remarks were made by Michael Miga, VISE Director and Harvie Branscomb Professor, Camilla Benbow, Patricia and Rodes Hart Dean of Education and Human Development and the producer of the film, Laura Bilodeau Overdeck, Founder of Bedtime Math and an educational philanthropist. Following the Rule Breakers screening, Dr. Miga moderated an inspiring panel featuring: Amber Afzali, who played Esin in the film Piper Cannon, a Vanderbilt graduate student in mechanical engineering studying surgical robotics, a member of Women of VISE, and coach of the all-girls FTC robotics team at St. Cecilia Academy in Nashville Bill Guttentag, the Oscar-winning director of "Rule Breakers" Laura Overdeck, an educational philanthropist and founder of Bedtime Math #RuleBreakers #WomenInSTEM #Innovation #Resilience #VISE Vanderbilt University School of Engineering
