Women’s health in the US is at a critical crossroads. A recent report from the Commonwealth Fund, featured in Femtech World, reveals alarming disparities, with women’s health in “perilous” conditions across many southeastern states. The findings highlight growing inequalities, including higher cancer rates and preventable deaths, particularly in states with near-total abortion bans and limited healthcare access. Experts are calling for change, emphasizing the need for technology-driven solutions like virtual care, remote patient monitoring, and telehealth to improve access and outcomes. The challenges are clear: lack of Medicaid expansion, fewer OB/GYNs, and missed opportunities to screen and treat women at risk. A recent study led by King's College London has shown that self-sampling HPV kits could enable over 1 million more women in England to participate in cervical cancer screening over the next three years. This innovation not only makes cervical screening more accessible but also targets under-screened women, particularly from underserved communities. Offering convenience, choice, and empowering women to take control of their health, self-sampling HPV tests could dramatically boost screening rates and save lives. The YouScreen trial demonstrated that mailing kits directly to women’s homes or offering them at GP practices could make a big impact in increasing participation. As healthcare continues to evolve, it's essential that we explore solutions like this that can make a real difference in women's health and help in the early detection of cervical cancer. The 2024 Nurx Reproductive Rights Watch Report is out, and it paints a sobering picture of the state of reproductive healthcare in the U.S. From increased restrictions to widening disparities in access, this report highlights the significant barriers women face in obtaining the care they need. The data shows that policies continue to limit access to essential healthcare services, disproportionately affecting women in underserved communities. For example, 18 states have implemented total or near-total abortion bans, and over 30 million women live in areas with limited access to reproductive health services. At Visana Health, we believe that every woman should have access to high-quality, comprehensive care, regardless of where she lives or her circumstances.
