Half of Women in the U.S. Skip or Delay Care – It’s Time to Act ?? An article in Fierce Healthcare highlights findings from a Deloitte report revealing a "triple threat" of barriers—affordability, access challenges, and past negative experiences—that cause 50% of women in the U.S. to delay or skip medical care. Key insights from the article: ?? Women are 35% more likely than men to skip care due to cost. ?? Nearly half of women are unprepared for a $500 medical emergency. ?? Past negative experiences with providers have caused 40% of women to avoid care altogether. ?? Women pay $15.4 billion more annually in out-of-pocket healthcare costs than men. At Visana Health, we see this as a call to action. Women deserve a healthcare system that is affordable, accessible, and designed to meet their unique needs. This means addressing disparities with thoughtful solutions, including: ? Increasing access to care through telehealth and convenient appointment options. ? Investing in preventive care and addressing women’s health beyond just fertility and childbirth. ? Listening to women, improving provider relationships, and building trust in care. As Fierce Healthcare notes, every stakeholder has a role to play—employers, payers, health systems, and innovators. Together, we can transform healthcare for women and create a system that works for everyone. A recent Hologic-Gallup survey highlights a troubling reality— 63% of women in the U.S. find it difficult to prioritize their health, with Gen Z, millennials, and Gen X women facing the greatest obstacles. Mental health, time constraints, financial strain, and caregiving demands all play a role, making it even harder for younger women and mothers to focus on their own well-being. Key findings include: - Feeling overwhelmed is the #1 barrier, with over 70% of women reporting this challenge. - Mental health concerns affect nearly 60% of women overall, with Gen Z women (over 80%) most impacted. - Work and financial limitations further prevent young women from prioritizing health, and mothers with children under 18 are especially affected, often placing others' needs before their own. This research underscores the urgent need for more accessible, affordable healthcare solutions. With nearly half of U.S. women feeling that their health needs are overlooked by elected officials, it’s time for a collective focus on empowering women to care for themselves without compromise. At Visana Health, we’re committed to addressing these issues by providing accessible, comprehensive care for women across every life stage, empowering them to reclaim their health and well-being.
