The U.S. Surgeon General has compared the negative health effects of social isolation to smoking cigarettes. While many aging Americans face this risk, veterans are particularly vulnerable. Nicole Roberts, an associate professor of psychology at ASU, has focused on improving health care outcomes for veterans, who often suffer from conditions related to their service and structured lifestyle. “In many ways, veterans are the epitome of being active contributors earlier in their lives,” Roberts says. “When they transition into older age, many continue making these active contributions, but others suffer from serious health conditions that can make them feel marginalized and isolated.” To address this issue, Roberts teamed up with Ming Zhao, an associate professor of computer science and engineering at ASU and a cross-disciplinary team to develop AI tools for edge devices, supported by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. Their project, “EdgeCare” (Engagement for Older Adults via Data-Generated Efficacy), aims to create AI-powered digital assistants to improve health care for aging veterans. Zhao's previous work in developing machine learning systems for user-friendly health care tools laid the groundwork for this initiative. The team includes experts like David W. Coon and Erin Chiou, who will address the social, interpersonal and cultural aspects of the project. Their goal is to create technology that veterans will use to enhance their independence and connectivity. EdgeCare will use small devices like smartphones and smartwatches to monitor health metrics and provide interventions. For instance, it can suggest memory exercises, physical workouts and social activities, while alerting medical professionals or loved ones if the veteran shows signs of declining activity or health. “The project is about helping veterans stay independent,” Zhao says. “But when they need help, they can get help.” Roberts adds, “Early tracking of cognitive and emotional changes can help veterans get care at earlier stages of cognitive decline.” By integrating broad information from the cloud with personal data on user devices, the AI system ensures security and privacy. The diverse team of researchers combines clinical, psychological, social and technical expertise to support veterans' health and well-being, aligning with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs initiatives. Veterans have shown enthusiasm for using new technology to improve their health and the health of their peers, highlighting the project's potential for broader applications. #ASUCores #ASUResearch #ASUInnovation #ASU #Veterans #NSFGrant #AI #HealthCare #VeteranCommunity #GPU #CPU #VeteranSupport #MentalHealth #Wellbeing #Engineering #Psychology #HumanSystems #AIResearch ASU Knowledge Enterprise https://lnkd.in/gNY79iX8

The effects of social isolation are damaging and can have severe consequences for quality of health. While many aging Americans are at risk of feeling or being socially isolated, veterans are particularly vulnerable. ? A cross-disciplinary team of four researchers working across four campuses at Arizona State University has united to create artificial intelligence solutions to improve health care outcomes for aging veterans. ? Led by Ming Zhao, an associate professor of computer science and engineering in #SCAI, the team has received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop #AI tools for edge devices to combat social isolation in retired military personnel. ? The team includes Nicole Roberts, an associate professor of psychology in the ASU School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, David W. Coon, associate dean of research initiatives, support, and engagement and professor in the Arizona State University - Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation and Erin Chiou, an associate professor of human systems engineering in The Polytechnic School. https://lnkd.in/gNY79iX8

On its 50th anniversary, the 2024 International Conference on Massive Storage Systems and Technology (MSST 2024) finished with a strong research program! As the Program Co-Chair, I helped develop the program including 27 high-quality papers, a keynote on “Memory & Storage: The Power of AI”, a poster session, and an industry panel on "Emerging Memory Technologies." Check out the online program (https://lnkd.in/gEmBRpfu) for all the contents! Sincere thanks to all the authors and attendees, my Program Co-Chair Benjamin Reed, steering committee chair Gary Grider, general chair Darrell Long, local chair Ahmed Amer, poster session chair Mai Zheng, and our distinguished keynote speaker Hoshik Kim and panelists David Emberson, Ronen Hyatt, Pekon Gupta, Adam Manzanares, and Vishal Tanna!

On behalf of the ASU Center for Accelerated Real Time Analytics (CARTA) (https://carta.asu.edu), I co-organized and attended the CARTA AI/AGI Symposium (https://bit.ly/3IDYM9f) hosted by Rutgers University. With 150+ attendees, the symposium was a great success! I look forward to working with many of the industry collaborators to develop groundbreaking and translational research projects! For more information about ASU CARTA, please visit our website https://carta.asu.edu. Here is a video clip of me introducing the capabilities of the ASU CARTA Center. #CARTACenter

Thanks to Kritshekhar Jha Neha Vadnere and all the graders!
Greetings folks! I am excited to share my recent learning endeavor ? This semester, I had the privilege of taking the Cloud Computing course taught by the Professor Ming Zhao . Through this course, I gained invaluable knowledge and hands-on experience in leveraging AWS cloud services for scalable and efficient application development. Through this semester, I worked on designing a face recognition model using AWS features and services. 1st version of the project: - Built a multi-tier application including Web, App and Data tier - Utilized services like EC2, S3 and SQS to accomplish scalable and concurrent processing of input images - Programmed custom code to scale system in and out as per user demand without relying on any AWS auto-scaling facilities 2nd version of the project: - Implemented face recognition on video inputs by extracting frames and running the recognition model on them - Focused on serverless computation harnessing features of Lambda function, Docker Images, Lambda layers, S3, and Cloud Watch - Achieved parallelism in computation to facilitate 100 input video requests followed by efficiently identifying individuals present in it On top of these standout projects, I gained knowledge about virtualization, memory management, Iaas, PaaS, SaaS and services associated with Machine Learning. I am grateful to prof Ming Zhao, TAs, and Graders for delivering these concepts, and I am looking forward to explore more about the capabilities of Cloud Computing. Thank you!! #CloudComputing #AWSCloudServices #AWS #Lambda #S3 #SQS #IaaS #PaaS #CloudArchitecture #FaceRecognition #ServerlessComputing #ScalableApplication #CloudWatch #Docker #CloudServices #Virtualization #MachineLearning
