VPFF Statement on the Abrupt Closure of the National Fire Academy On behalf of the over 10,000 career firefighters, emergency medical providers and communications officers of the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters, we wish to express our overwhelming disappointment at the closure of the National Fire Academy (NFA) in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The NFA is a world-renowned facility that provides best-in-class education to the leaders of the American fire service. It is a campus where departments from all across the country, and even beyond our borders, can learn, plan and help determine the future of responding to emergency incidents. In addition to classes and events at the campus, the NFA hosts classes and training at departments all across the country. On March 7, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced the immediate cancellation of all classes and off-campus instruction programs. The notice stated “FEMA is currently in the process of evaluating agency programs and spending to ensure alignment with Administration priorities.” While the review of expenditures and operations can be expected of any new administration, we believe the abrupt closure and suspension of the NFA and its related fire service programs is extremely shortsighted and risks the lives and property of American taxpayers. The leadership of the VPFF joins other fire service organizations in imploring the federal government to quickly reverse this decision. At a time when natural and man-made disasters continue to affect our citizens, we must ensure the NFA continues its goal of preparing our nation’s emergency responders.

Chartered in 1955, the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters (VPFF) is an association of local unions representing over 10,000 International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) members across the Commonwealth of Virginia. VPFF members provide fire protection and emergency medical services to over 80% of Virginia’s population. As well, VPFF members provide these and other specialized services at several of Virginia’s major airports and military installations. VPFF members are fire fighters, fire officers, fire inspectors, fire investigators, hazardous materials specialists, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, training instructors, water rescue specialists, and 911 communications officers/dispatchers.
