Consumers can appreciate the far-reaching impact of those producing the nation’s food, fuel and fiber any day of the year. But during National Ag Week, March 16-22, farmers receive special recognition for their vital role. Agriculture impacts all of Virginia, which is home to around 39,000 farms spanning 7.3 million acres, according to the 2022 Census of Agriculture.

The Virginia General Assembly recognized last year that solutions need to be developed regarding the statewide shortage of large animal veterinarians. As a result, the legislature authorized a two-year work group organized by the Board of Veterinary Medicine that includes Virginia Farm Bureau Federation, along with other livestock and veterinary groups. Over the past year, the work group has been evaluating and providing recommendations on strategies, programs and financial incentives to help address the shortages of large animal veterinarians across the commonwealth. Farmers can assist in this effort by submitting their input and sharing experiences through an anonymous survey included in this article.

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Bruce L. Hiatt, a true champion for Virginia agriculture and former Virginia Farm Bureau Federation president. Hiatt's agricultural roots ran deep, beginning on his family's orchard established by his great-grandparents in Carroll County. In 1979, he returned to that same family orchard, where he cultivated apples, cherries and peaches for decades. His dedication to agriculture extended far beyond his own farm. Hiatt served on the VFBF board of directors beginning in 1981, was elected vice president in 1988, and was elected president in 1998. During his eight-year presidency, he led our organization into the 21st century with membership growing to a record 148,031 families. Hiatt's visionary leadership strengthened agricultural policy and was instrumental in creating Virginia's Agriculture and Forestry Secretary position and securing significant funding for farmland preservation. In 1999, his contributions were recognized nationally when he was elected to the American Farm Bureau Federation board of directors, and in 2001, Progressive Farmer magazine named him "Man of the Year in Virginia Agriculture." Our hearts and deepest condolences go out to his wife, Connie; daughter, Dana, and her husband Kamron Benfield; granddaughter, Anya Benfield; and many other family and friends during this difficult time. Virginia agriculture has lost a true leader whose integrity, vision and lifelong commitment to farming have left an enduring legacy.
