Although clinical research takes time to develop safe and effective medical treatments, one of the best ways to streamline the process is to invest in cross-institutional collaboration. VCCRN connects clinical researchers with partners in academic, healthcare, and government institutions to take advantage of Virginia’s robust resources and talent. By forming strategic partnerships, clinical researchers can leverage resources to carry out their projects more efficiently. As Karen C. Johnston (Principal Investigator & Co-Director, iTHRIV) notes, this mission is consistent with VCCRN’s driving partners. Advarra’s recent survey report on collaboration between sites, sponsors, and CROs reveals efforts gaps in cooperation. Christine Senn, PhD, (Sr. VP for Site-Sponsor Innovation, Advarra) summarizes the key barriers to clinical research collaboration. She notes, “Organizations that invest in integration—of their people, processes and technology—will be best positioned to conduct successful trials and advance new treatments for patients.” Dr. Senn’s comments resonate with VCCRN’s mission to facilitate inter-institutional collaboration to bolster Virginia’s clinical research environment. Modern clinical research relies on long-term data collection and iterative trials to improve medical treatments. A prime example is the Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) system, which allows patients with diabetes to monitor their glucose levels in real time. Access to continuous data means patients can adjust their medication, diet, or activities quickly, addressing issues before they escalate. Now, emerging CGM innovations are being tested to further increase device efficacy and patient care. The VHHA’s 2024 Annual Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Leaders Summit was a resounding success. Hundreds of healthcare professionals attended to recognize innovative leaders in the space, share their expertise, and find new ways to improve patient care. Regarding the event VHHA President and CEO Sean T. Connaughton commented: “One of the things I most appreciate about this annual summit is witnessing the positive experiences healthcare leaders from around Virginia take from the event each year. Holding positions of responsibility at organizations where medical intervention helps protect lives is serious work. Part of our role is to support members so they can focus on the primary job of serving patients. It is a privilege to support them and facilitate events that promote collaboration among hospitals.” Follow the VHHA for updates on 2025's Summit.
