Last night, 24 Village Volunteers joined together at the Community Food Bank of NJ in Hillside. First, we prepared 40 boxes of holiday bags, over 1100 pounds of food! Then, we sorted donations and packed boxes for distribution to food pantries in need. We sorted 213 repack cases?(avg. 30 lbs./case). The average number of meals supported by this work: 5,325 (1 meal = 1.2 lbs.). We are so proud to be able to give back during the holiday season to one of our food rescue partners! Thanks to all who volunteered their time to make a difference and help the community. We had a lot of first-time volunteers, and Village really showed up last night- thank you Village!

Last week, 20 Village Volunteers packed 280 boxes of groceries at the Community Food Bank of New Jersey for local senior citizens in need! From making boxes, to packing boxes, to cleaning up all the cardboard and plastic, our volunteer TEAM did it all! Thanks to all who came out and spent their evening helping out the local community in honor of #HungerActionMonth.

Representatives from America's Grow-a-Row Farms joined us in two of our Fairway stores who excelled during #PenniesForProduce. Pennies for Produce was our charitable campaign in June, which gave customers and associates the opportunity to donate to Grow-a-Row & help give back produce to those in need. With over $52,000 collected from Village Supermarket stores, we were able to give back over 260,000 servings of produce! Special shout-out to our Fairway of 74th street and Fairway of 86th street teams for going above & beyond to make a difference in their communities!

The ShopRite of Greater Morristown is excited to cut the ribbon on a new TerraCycle recycling kiosk and welcome customers to drop off their flexible-film plastic packaging for recycling. The easy-to-use recycling kiosk accepts flexible-film plastic waste such as empty chip and snack bags, pet food and treat packaging and even empty potting soil packages -- helping keep more waste out of landfills. With deep sadness, we share the passing of William P. Sumas (Bill), our esteemed Chairman of the Board and second-generation Sumas family leader. Bill peacefully passed on Thursday, July 11th, surrounded by his loving family. Bill was a visionary leader whose passion for excellence and dedication to his family, our industry, and the communities we serve made an enduring impact far beyond Village Super Market and Wakefern. He was the ultimate gentleman and master of ceremonies for all Village events. We will miss his grace and poetry. As Bill often would say, “A Bit of Fragrance Always Clings to the Hand That Gives Roses.” We hope an element of Bill’s charm lingers with all of us. Throughout his illustrious career, Bill's leadership and innovative spirit propelled Village to unprecedented success. His commitment to creating deep connections with the community and governmental agencies created pathways of cooperation throughout Village's trade area. It elevated Village Super Market beyond a grocer to a true community stakeholder. Beyond his professional achievements, Bill will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering integrity. He was a devoted husband, father, uncle, grandfather, friend, and mentor whose warmth and wisdom touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His philanthropic efforts and community involvement enriched countless lives and reflected his deep-rooted commitment to making a positive difference. Our hearts are with his loving wife of 20 years, Patricia Walsh-Sumas; his children, Abbey Sumas (Joseph Melnyk), William D. Sumas (Jade Direnfeld), and Phoebe Long (Brian Long); and his cherished grandchildren, Remi and Theodore Melnyk. He is also survived by his brother, John Sumas (Nancy Sumas), and his sisters, Linda Blatt, and Patricia Anagnostis (Gregory Anagnostis). In this time of loss, we celebrate Billy's remarkable life and enduring legacy. Village will honor his memory by continuing to uphold the values he held dear and by striving to build on the strong foundation he laid. A public visitation will be held on Wednesday July 17, 2024, from 9:00AM-12:00PM at the Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Church, 20 Hillcrest Road, Holmdel, NJ. The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation hours at church. Burial will be private.? We are excited to highlight our ongoing partnership with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey and share the impactful work we accomplished together in May. Over the past month, our dedicated team of volunteers attended the Night of 300,000 Meals and the Blue Jean Ball. We proudly donated over $15,000 to continue to support their crucial mission of alleviating hunger and fostering hope.
