How does accountable care translate to healthier people?? ? A new study in the AJMC - The American Journal of Managed Care, conducted by America's Physician Groups, provides evidence that accountable care practices are associated with better outcomes for patients, including for patients outside a risk-based payment arrangement. According to the study, physicians with high-risk exposure in Medicare Advantage provided higher quality, more efficient care in 22 out of 26 metrics for their patients enrolled in traditional Medicare compared to physicians with low MA risk exposure.? ? These results are the first to show that a physician group’s exposure to financial risk can lead to improved care for patients not covered under a risk-based payment arrangement. Physician groups engaged in accountable care adopt different care practices including higher use of preventative care, greater reliance on evidence-based medicine, and lower utilization of low value care, driving better outcomes for patients while reducing unnecessary care. These practices extend to care for other patients, including those not covered by a risk-based payment arrangement.? ? This study highlights the importance of accountable care relationships in transforming our health system. Risk-based payment, when done properly, incentivizes health care providers to adopt evidence-based practices to deliver better outcomes and lower costs.? ?
