Three employees at the Shorewood Mariano's were recognized for their role in saving a customer's life. Last week, we had the opportunity to learn more about their courageous efforts.?? The Village had the pleasure of joining members of the Kroger team, Mariano’s Shorewood leadership and staff, and Troy Fire Protection District in recognizing three courageous employees at an Angel Award Presentation. The Angel Award at Kroger recognizes individuals who demonstrate swift thinking and courage, positively impacting others in times of need. This year, Kroger honored three Mariano’s Shorewood employees: Kim Zad (front-end lead), Ryan Tutko (pharmacist), and Rich Threm (co-manager). Last November, a customer at the Shorewood store experienced a medical emergency. Kim alerted store leads and called 911. Ryan and Rich began CPR and used the AED, administering two shocks until paramedics arrived. Thanks to the combined efforts, the customer was revived and is now stable and healthy. In recognition of their actions, the Troy Fire Protection District presented Life Saver Awards to Kim, Ryan, and Rich, along with the Kroger Angel Award. Today, we once again recognize their courage to act quickly and compassionately. Way to go, Kim, Ryan, and Rich, for your incredible bravery.

As we welcome the New Year in Shorewood, we’re already anticipating the new developments set to unfold in 2025. One standout project is the Village of Shorewood YMCA. Last March, it was announced that the Village would be partnering with the YMCA to create a state-of-the-art facility at 1801 W Jefferson Street. Since the site work began last September, the Y has been undergoing construction in preparation for its grand opening in the Spring of 2026. Just before the New Year, steel beams were installed, and the framework for the new facility is already beginning to take shape. Pictures definitely help put the last four months of progress into perspective! The amenities planned to be built in Phase 1 include the lobby, kids’ corner/activity center, community rooms, gymnasium, wellness center, locker rooms, aquatics, and administrative space. The partnership includes: $10 million from the Village toward the initial development of the 50,000 SF facility, the option for Shorewood residents to sign up for a membership without paying the YMCA joiner's fee, and the opportunity for the Village Parks and Recreation staff to operate select recreation programs out of the facility. We’re eager to watch the Shorewood facility come to life this year and are thrilled to join the YMCA in the commitment to offer quality services to our residents.
