On September 25th, as Hurricane Helene was making landfall in Florida, the state of North Carolina made a request for two Type II Swift-water Teams. Illinois granted that request, deploying a 12-person team from Illinois Task Force 1 (IL-TF 1) as well as another 12-person team from Illinois Water Rescue 1 (IL-WR 1). The Arlington Heights Fire Department answered the call and approved two of our members for deployment: LT Dwayne Wood with IL-TF-1 and FF/PM Dave Johnson with IL-WR 1. Upon arrival in Asheville, NC conditions were difficult all around due to excessive flood waters, road blockages and large amounts of debris. The teams were able to set up bases of operation in local fire stations and churches. Several of their daily missions included working alongside Task Force teams from North Carolina, local Fire Departments as well as civilian volunteers on systematic searches in heavily damaged and sometimes very remote areas. Over the course of their deployment, each team assisted in several rescues by both boat and land. Some of these included dangerous water operations rescuing victims from trees, rooftops and swift-water conditions. As the waters receded, both teams remained in the area and continued assisting with search and recovery efforts. The area’s infrastructure was heavily impacted leaving local residents in the wake a very long and painful recovery. Our members returned home safely to their families on October 10th.
