This program, one of 4 "cultural broker" initiatives, equips individuals to be community ambassadors. KUSA-TV, 9NEWS, visited Village Exchange Center today as we continue to provide ongoing support to newcomers at our health and resource fair. We do this to help ensure they have a running chance at self sufficiency and to ensure the people we house are banked, have jobs to afford their rent, and do not end up back out on the street or in a shelter. Village Exchange Center hosted a health and resource fair at our main office on Havana Street in Aurora on Friday, May 24, 2024. Together with a half dozen community partners and resources, representing the City of Denver, Adams County, and several local nonprofits, more than 225 individuals attended. Representatives from RTD, Citywide Banks, a division of HTLF Bank, Miel, CAHEP, and the Denver Office of Immigration and Refugee Affairs set up tables and we conducted back to school vaccines, while VEC’s housing cultural navigators conducted their second monthly event for the more than 70 families we have housed since the end of March, 2024. Through a grant from Kaiser Permanente Foundation the Village Exchange Center looked to create a new model of providing WIC and SNAP benefits to historically marginalized communities and partnered with ADAMS COUNTY HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES and Arapahoe County to get it done! Village Exchange Center is working hard to not only lobby for State and Federal funds for ourselves, but for all of our partner organizations that are also on the front lines of the migrant crisis. We appreciate Mayor Mike Johnston and the democratic Congressional Delegation for all your efforts to address the need for more FEMA dollars, the urgency of expediting work authorization visas and creating a coordinated point of entry for migrants, among other things.
