Viking Line’s buffet restaurants will begin serving responsibly raised chicken from the family-owned company Bj?ref?gel, based in southern Sweden. The birds are given plant-based feed and have twice as much room to move around in compared to the Swedish standard. The company is also Sweden’s only producer of climate-certified chicken. Starting in April, the buffet restaurants on board Viking Line’s vessels will serve responsibly raised chicken from the Swedish family-owned company Bj?ref?gel, which is certified according to standards set by the Swedish Seal of Quality and the Swedish Bird Association. Breeding is governed by ethical principles with a focus on the animals’ wellbeing, and birds have twice the amount of space compared to the Swedish industry standard. They are given plant-based feed without any genetically modified ingredients, antibiotics or antibiotic-like compounds. “Viking Line is known for its quality restaurants, and we want to offer our passengers the best food on the Baltic Sea. We believe that good food tastes even better when our customers know that we invest in responsibly produced quality ingredients,” says Janne Lindholm, Manager, Viking Line Restaurants. Viking Line passengers drink 8.5 million cups of coffee each year, and now every cup supports better living conditions for farmers and reduces climate emissions. All coffee served on Viking Line’s vessels is now sustainably produced Slow Forest coffee, grown in a 75-hectare restored coffee forest in the high plateaus of Laos and roasted in Denmark. ? This coffee is cultivated using agroforestry methods, meaning the shrubs grow under shade trees rather than in traditionally cleared fields. The restored coffee forest acts as a significant carbon sink, with a goal of planting 30,000 trees to enhance biodiversity. Farmers benefit from fair wages, above-average income, and sickness coverage, ensuring a more sustainable livelihood. Even coffee grounds from Viking Line’s ships are recycled into garden soil, reducing waste. ?? Viking Line’s new coffee is 100% arabica, with a balanced acidity and notes of nuts and chocolate. "We chose a dark roast for the vessels’ coffee, which suits the taste preferences of both Finns and Swedes nowadays in terms of roasting. Before we made our final choice, the new coffee was tested in Viking Cinderella’s buffet restaurant and employee canteen – and both test groups gave it top marks", says Janne Lindholm, Manager, Viking Line Restaurants. We at Viking Line are proud to collaborate with Port of Turku Ltd and Ports of Stockholm to create a green, fossil-free shipping corridor between Stockholm and Turku by 2035. Over the past year, we have made significant progress, exploring solutions like biofuels, battery technology, and onshore power supply to cut emissions and move toward more sustainable shipping. Today in Turku, we gathered with key stakeholders to celebrate the one-year anniversary of this initiative, discussing achievements, challenges, and the next steps in this ambitious journey. "We are proud to be part of this important co-operation project for a cleaner Baltic Sea. Our most significant investment so far is to offer all our passengers and freight customers biofuel for transport between Stockholm and Turku, reducing emissions for their journeys by 90%," says Jan Hanses, CEO of Viking Line. As leaders in sustainable maritime transport, we remain committed to reducing our environmental impact and driving innovation for a cleaner Baltic Sea. ????
