For me, Vie Science is deeply personal. It’s a reflection of everything I’ve learned and experienced in my career, shaped by moments as early as I can remember. Roaming the forests, rivers, and ponds in ???? #Canada, fascinated by wildlife reproducing, I began to form early ideas about fertility and the deep interconnection between human and ecosystem health. These moments planted seeds of curiosity and passion for understanding health as a shared journey between humans, animals, and the environment—a concept I later came to know as One Health (Op Ed in preparation with Shanna Swan, PhD and Dr. Susanne Brander). From my early days as a nurse to my years as a scientist and professor uncovering the root causes of fertility, pregnancy, and child health, Vie Science represents the culmination of countless moments of inspiration, discovery, and growth. Recognizing patterns and revealing connections illuminated through a lifetime of observation, integration, and synthesis—coupled with real-time opportunities in the AI and data era—shaped this vision into something transformative. Vie Science is bigger than any single published manuscript, chapter written, peer-review report, academic discussion, class lecture, meeting, or prestigious appointment. Vie is about couples—no matter how they define themselves—and helping them have healthy babies. It’s about our collective future and the health of the next generation. ???? A single question has motivated my entire career: Why do some children get sick, and how can we prevent disease to promote lifelong health for all kids? This question has guided me from the bedside as a nurse to the lab as a scientist, driving me to understand the roots of health and illness in children. ???? I began my journey at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, caring for children with serious illnesses—cancer, asthma, neurodevelopmental disabilities, ADHD, autoimmune disorders, and major depression. Some of these children passed away far too soon; others faced a lifetime of poor health. The burden of childhood diseases to families and society is immeasurable. Each child I met left a mark—they are my “why” every single day. ?? This work awakened my lifelong pursuit of understanding and solving for fertility, pregnancy, and child health. I loved caring for these children, but as my heart broke, my mind sought solutions, and my spirit remained unsettled. I committed myself to a lifetime of service, not only as a caregiver but as a scientist, public health advocate, thought leader, and now entrepreneur. ?? What I discovered after two decades of research and experience was something profound: a child’s health journey begins long before they are born—sometimes generations before and fertility is the foundation of lifelong health. ?? I am both grateful and humbled to have been asked by three of the world’s top journals—Nature Communications, Nature Medicine, and the New England Journal of Medicine—to review breakthrough scientific research over the last week. The opportunity to engage with cutting-edge science, while guiding and shaping the work of leading researchers, is truly inspiring. As a reproductive epidemiologist and evolutionary scientist, these experiences not only deepen my knowledge but fuel my passion for pursuing better health for all. We are undoubtedly living through chaotic times, with climate change and declining populations weighing heavily on our collective minds.
