Coaching has always been difficult for me. I learned about coaching early in my career working with athletes. It was very prescriptive. A lot of "telling" and short term success. I learned quickly that if you want long term change, the person making the change needs to feel empowered and part of the decision making process. This means - Don't tell them what to do. And that's where it's hard. What if I know exactly what they need to do? What if I can fix this really quickly and easily by just telling them what to do? What I see their problem and I have the solution? What if I've been in their shoes before and I can just tell them to do what I did? What' if I'm the expert and they aren't and I can tell them what they need to know? NONE of this is coaching. Coaching empowers people. It creates long term sustainable change. It creates true authentic connection and yes...it often takes more time and energy and it requires us to stay quiet, listen intentionally and know how to ask the right questions. Today I'm creating space for healthcare leaders to understand the inner work necessary for leaders to be successful coaches. Energy, connection and courage at work. #vidlwork
