I’m so proud to be a part of the The Video Consortium! If you’re a video journalist or nonfiction filmmaker, consider joining this incredible community!
We’re still glowing from last month’s Future of Nonfiction Video 2025, where we shared ideas and problem-solved with 400+ talented nonfiction storytellers over two inspiring days. Is the industry evolving at hyper-speed? Yes.?Are there plenty of world events beyond our control??Also yes.?But we're evolving, too. We have all the tools, creativity — and the powerful community — to keep rising above and telling the bold stories that catalyze change. We believe the future of nonfiction video is bright — because of you! ?? And guess what? We’re running it back in 2026. ?? Thank you to Knight Foundation, Columbia University - Graduate School of Journalism, Sony Electronics, and R?DE for making the magic of FONV 2025 happen.??? ???Filmed by VCer Boris Shirman ?? Filmmaker and VCer David Usui's cinema verité feature-length documentary, BEEN HERE STAY HERE, is an intimate look at Christianity and climate change colliding. A close-knit Christian fishing community living on Tangier Island faces an existential threat as rising seas threaten their centuries-old way of life, sustained by faith and the rhythms of the Chesapeake Bay. ?? "I didn’t grow up religious. I didn’t go to church. But I wanted to understand, and to create something that wasn’t speaking about a community — but to them — with an open heart, instead of a pointed finger. In the documentary world, we’ve put a lot of energy into questions of representation — important, necessary work. But I wonder if we’re also being called to expand that conversation. What does it mean to tell stories in a way that bridges rather than reinforces divides? Can inclusivity extend beyond identity to encompass ways of thinking, ways of believing? And how does that shift what we make and how we make it?" — David Usui ??? If you're in the DC/Maryland area, BEEN HERE STAY HERE is screening at two great festivals: Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital on March 25 (https://lnkd.in/evcDkiq9) and at Annapolis Film Festival March 28-29 (https://lnkd.in/eQbzBehc). Director/Producer/Cinematographer/Editor: David Usui Producer: Giorgio Angelini Editor: Elizabeth Rao DP: Peter Steusloff Composer: James William Blades Story Producer: Martha Wollner EPs: Jeff Sobrato, Nicole Shipley, Ryan Harrington, Jaden Levitt Sound Recordist: Pasquin Mariani Assistant Camera: Jonah Koplin Gaffer: Kristin Steusloff Assistant Editor: Chloe Abrahams
