Clunes was buzzing with activity during the latest Booktown Festival over the weekend. ? Creative Clunes, the organisation behind the popular festival, will be celebrating 10 years in the Clunes Station building later this year. The group moved into the 150-year-old station building in November 2015, after VicTrack completed refurbishment works under the Victorian Government’s Community Use of Vacant Rail Buildings (CUVRB) Program. ? The extensive restoration enabled the station building to become a community-based cultural hub with office and meeting spaces – bringing this VicTrack asset to life. ? We were thrilled to facilitate the donation of materials from Victoria’s Big Build rail projects that have been repurposed to keep a herd of Asian elephants safe in their new world-class enclosure at Werribee Open Range Zoo. The materials included rail track, timber and elevator cable from the Level Crossing Removal Project and pieces of rail from the Metro Tunnel Project. The repurposed rail track and elevator cables have been used in the enclosure’s five-kilometre perimeter fence. Timber has been used to construct animal enrichment structures, boardwalks and gates, and visitor amenities.

We love celebrating our team members and their contributions. It’s part of making VicTrack a great place to work. We recently acknowledged some of our longest-serving team members including Bryan Mannix from the Property Group and Jesus Jumangit from Telecommunications, who have worked at VicTrack for 15 years. Congratulations and thank you also to Christina Lazarus and Jay Meewathurage from Telecommunications and Susan Burge from Corporate Services who have been with us for 10 years. We also acknowledged several staff members for reaching three and five years with VicTrack including Alistair Fleming, Lushen Kanniappen and Mohamed Aly.

“Gender equality is not a nice to have, it is a must have,” said Dr Niki Vincent, Victoria’s Public Sector Gender Equality Commissioner. We were delighted to welcome Dr Vincent for a special presentation and discussion panel to mark this year’s International Women’s Day. Dr Vincent shared her insights on progress and trends in the public sector and actions that organisations and individuals are taking to address the challenges in achieving gender equality. “In Victoria, the gender pay gap remains stubbornly high, and women are underrepresented in leadership positions,” she said. Dr Vincent noted that the Gender Equality Act has provided a powerful tool to help close the gap by inviting public scrutiny of more than 300 organisations covering 450,000 employees. She said progress reports against organisations’ Gender Equality Action Plans showed some hopeful signs that positive change can be made when organisations take action. With the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day being ‘accelerate action’, Dr Vincent was joined on a panel by two of our employees, Mariana Kopilas, Manager HR Operations and Antony Borgese MAICD, Acting Executive General Manager, Property Group. The panel, facilitated by Kristen Georgakopoulos, Executive General Manager Corporate Services, discussed what accelerate action means. Panellists identified flexible working, empathy, a safe workplace free of discrimination and sexual harassment, and the elimination of unconscious bias as keys to turning promises into progress. VicTrack recognises we are part of a traditionally male-concentrated industry, and we have a challenge to increase our female workforce. We have been taking action to promote and achieve gender equality under our first Gender Equality Action plan including: - use of gender-neutral job ads and imagery - running unconscious bias training for leaders - requiring gender balance on interview panels - flexible work arrangements for everyone - offering a leadership development program for women, called Empower. On World Engineering Day, we asked Network Design Team leader, Sladjana Gobeljic-Karapandzic, who joined VicTrack 13 years ago, what she loves about being an engineer and how engineers are helping to build a sustainable future. “As engineers, we like to think about what we can do for the future rather than think in the present or look to the past. “You can see from advances in computing and with the development of artificial intelligence, we're continually challenging ourselves to use technology to make improvements.” With the theme of this year’s World Engineering Day ‘Shaping our sustainable future through engineering,’ Sladjana said engineers are working to make telecommunications more environmentally friendly. A team of 14 VicTrack volunteers ‘Stepped up to clean up’ at our Dynon Rail Freight Terminal today ahead of Clean Up Australia Ltd Day on Sunday 2 March. They collected 50 kilos of waste and 5 kilos of materials for recycling, helping to keep the area free of rubbish. The event also provided employees with an opportunity to connect with colleagues from other parts of the business and see operations at the freight terminal. Employees were able to access volunteer leave – a provision in our enterprise agreement – to take part. #CleanUpAustralia #volunteer
