The Evolution of AI Receptionists: Where We Are and Where We're Headed We had a chance to experience a demo from one of the industry leader's in AI receptionist offerings, here are some immediate thoughts coming out of the demo... Today's AI receptionists showcase impressive capabilities in understanding and responding to callers, but there's a noticeable latency (delay) between query and response that affects the natural flow of conversation. While the latency wasn't a total deal-breaker, it's extremely noticeable and I could see it causing some friction for the user experiencing the call. I'm going to assume (this is not official but it's a confident and educated assumption) that the latency stems from their current technical architecture: audio must be captured, transcribed to text, processed by an AI model, and then converted back to speech. That process takes time which creates noticeable latency. Here’s the exciting part: we’re on the brink of a new era. Emerging multi-modal models promise to handle audio inputs directly, which could dramatically reduce delays and make interactions feel much more natural. This space is rapidly advancing and we're already seeing and experiencing demos of Voice powered AI with significantly reduced latency that feels impressively natural. While today’s solutions (like those from our valued partners) are essential building blocks, they’re just the beginning of what’s possible. For organizations considering implementing this technology today, it's important to understand both its current limitations and its tremendous potential. While today's solutions may not yet deliver a perfect seamless experience we're all hoping for, they represent an important stepping stone in the evolution of business communication. One could confidently argue that the technology we're experiencing in this space is the worst it will ever be and will only continue to get better. Does this mean right now is the right time to flip the switch on powering your communications with AI? That answer really depends on your specific scenario and needs. For most organizations, at the very least - this is a good time to gain an understanding for where things are and where they're going. This is also a great time to assess where your organization is at with your current tech stack plus the organized data you'll need to prepare to adequately provide an AI solution with all it needs to get to work for you.
