“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead. Approximately 4 decades ago during the mid 1980’s an initiative to help support the arts passed City of Virginia Beach’s City Council known as the Percent-For-Art program but by 1990 it was still not funded. About 10 years ago I and other arts supporters became more aware that the Arts in VA Beach did not have a sustainable funding source while other cities were investing in such programs. Our arts & culture communities were ever-growing through public demand and the generosity of private donors, businesses, and non-profits. Just a few years ago others began inquiring why and researched and started showing up to City Hall. This past year a grassroots initiative known as Citizens for The VB Arts was created. This past week in 2024 some 40+ years later - We Finally Did It! Thank you to Virginia Beach City Council on a consent vote this past Tuesday authorizing the new $1.6 Million of arts funding in 2024-2025! The beneficiaries are the citizens of Virginia Beach. The Arts Mean Business as an economic driver, improving quality of life, and creating an authentic sense of place in Virginia Beach. Thanks to all who shared their stories and showed up and to all those who helped support the Virginia Beach Arts along the way. ?? What a great night at the LISC Hampton Roads business social at Esoteric in the ViBe Creative District where our community partner Steve Lawson of The Lawson Company participated on a panel highlighting affordable housing needs! A great turn out and opportunity to celebrate the success of The Lawson Comoany’s award winning project at Seaside Harbor, a prime example of affordable housing which has integrated seamlessly in the ViBe community.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who has been a part of my journey, from my daughters and family, to friends, colleagues, fellow board members, volunteers, patrons, and the many mentors along the way. This past week during the Annual National Travel And Tourism awards I was honored with a ‘Hospitality Hero Award‘ from the City of Virginia Beach and the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) named in honor of Jim Ricketts, who dedicated much of his life— 40 + years— to Virginia Beach Tourism and the state. This particularly was heartfelt because some 20+ years ago - as a new member of the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association and Chair of VA Beach’s and the region’s first Restaurant Week, I received recognition from then Director of Tourism, Jim Rickets, First Lady of VA Anne Holton and the Honorable Mayor Meyera Oberndorf.
