My neighborhood is resurfacing tonight after a massive wind storm, complete with 50mph winds, downed trees and power lines, school closures, and as many as 70,000 households without power in our county alone. We joke (lovingly!) about the 'internet refugees' who show up at the doors of Vibe Coworks on our region's frequent internet outage days. Yet it's days like these when have the honor of proving time and time again that *coworking spaces are critical community infrastructure*. When all else goes south, coworking spaces like ours is where people go: ? to get Internet access ? to work ? to give important presentations ? to hold job interviews ? to keep a telehealth appointment ? to charge devices, including hearing aids, CPAP machines, and EV cars ? to warm up ? to get coffee ? to commiserate ? to laugh ? to escape the chaos of home... To say that Vibe Coworks was busy today is an understatement. We saw a 225% increase in the number of people that came through our doors on a single day (!) while Puget Sound Energy worked tirelessly to get the lights back on for the entire region. And when folks arrived? They found fresh baked banana bread from Amber Sallay, endless pots of fresh brewed coffee, locally roasted by GROUNDS FOR CHANGE INC (less than 4 miles down the road!) and served up by our very own Kelsi Nymon and Ann Burkhart, LEGO bins and coloring walls to distract the kids stranded from school closures... and of course, blazing fast WiFi from Kitsap PUD.
