I am excited to announce Viam’s partnership with Billion Oyster Project. I have long believed that technology can and should be used to address real-world environmental and climate challenges. This partnership is exemplary of the impact technology can have on building smarter, cleaner, more resilient cities. Oysters play a crucial role in environmental sustainability, filtering water, providing habitat for marine life and reducing wave force during storms. The Billion Oyster Project has been restoring oyster reefs in New York Harbor since 2014, engaging over 10,000 volunteers and students in this vital work. We are eager to help them scale these efforts further. Through our partnership, Viam enables remote, efficient, and real-time monitoring and adjustments to tank conditions, ensuring they are optimized for oyster growth. Our technology will monitor 30 million oysters, which will be installed at Brooklyn Bridge Park, contributing to a healthy ecosystem in New York Harbor. Today we’re announcing our partnership with Billion Oyster Project to support the restoration of oyster reefs in New York Harbor. ?? The Billion Oyster Project’s work has an impact on all New Yorkers. Oysters play a crucial role in supporting healthy ecosystems by filtering toxins from the water, creating habitats for marine life, and reducing wave force during storms. During the pilot phase of the partnership, over 30 million larval oysters were monitored by Viam’s technology. After setting, the surviving spat were installed at Brooklyn Bridge Park in two phases. Viam’s technology powers smart sensors that will ensure optimal growing conditions. Each oyster is expected to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day by adulthood and provide a breeding ground that will naturally repopulate surrounding areas. This installation will not only enhance the local ecosystem but also contributes to the long-term resilience of New York Harbor against storm surges. The best kind of hacking projects are the ones you care about breaking. At Viam, we ask our engineers to spend 20% of their time working on side projects. The projects that are the most impactful are the things that people care about if they break. I want engineers to look for things in their personal life that they want to fix or make smarter rather than a flashy, but mostly useless, gadget. These projects don’t have to be big or expensive to make an impact either. There is already simple software out there that can be a massive problem solver. If you look at my own hacking projects, they are all things that impact my daily life. For example if my cat food feeder breaks, my cat gets hungry (and mad), if my sprinkler system that runs on Viam breaks, my lawn dies, etc. etc. All of this is to say that by using your time to fix real world problems you inspire others to do the same, and open up a world of opportunity.
