U.S. Army Lt. Col. Travis Walter, commander of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Detachment 2 briefed the VFW delegation on their ongoing work in Vietnam. The delegation toured the facilities, to include the heritage room, operations center, and the memorial to the seven American and nine Vietnamese officials who were lost when their Mi-7 helicopter crashed into a mountain in Quang Binh province while on a recovery mission in 2001. ? The VFW delegation next met with the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) leadership at their headquarters in Hanoi. VFW Jr. Vice Commander Tim Peters and VUFO Vice President Dong Huy Cuong each shared their perspectives on the importance veterans have on the people-to-people diplomacy in promoting peace and continuing reconciliation between the two countries.? ? Then the VFW delegation visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vietnam (MOFA) where they met with its Deputy Director, Mr. Le Cong Tien, who is also the Director of the @Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Persons (VNOSMP). Central to the discussion was how vital U.S. support is to their mission of finding American and Vietnamese service members missing in action, as well as other war legacies such as dioxin remediation and unexploded ordnance disposal. Tien also expressed his appreciation for the VFW's continued advocacy on these issues, amplifying their importance to members of Congress and the administration. ? To conclude the day, the VFW delegation hosted a reception at DPAA Detachment 2's TDY House for members of the detachment, staff from the embassy and expatriate veterans to thank the detachment and the embassy for their hospitality and for the important work they all do on behalf of the American people.? ? The VFW delegation is in Vietnam for the next phase of its MIA Recovery Mission trip, stopping at the Maison Centrale, which translates to ‘Central House’ in French. The infamous former prison, also known as the Hoa Lo Prison or “Hanoi Hilton,” once housed Vietnamese revolutionaries and American POWs during the Vietnam War. The delegation also stopped at the John McCain Memorial to pay respect to the former U.S. senator who was a POW held at the Maison Centrale during the war in Vietnam.
