??? The Use of Sotalol Versus Atenolol Therapy in Dogs with Severe Subaortic Stenosis and the Effects on Survival In today’s VETgirl podcast, we discuss subaortic stenosis (SAS) in dogs and the effects of medical management using two different beta-blockers: sotalol versus atenolol. This discussion is based on a study by Tjostheim et al. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison titled “Association of sotalol versus atenolol therapy with survival in dogs with severe subaortic stenosis.” Subaortic stenosis is a congenital condition characterized by the narrowing of the left ventricular outflow tract, leading to obstruction of blood flow. This pressure overload causes concentric left ventricular hypertrophy, negatively impacting coronary blood flow and resulting in myocardial ischemia. These conditions create a substrate for cardiac arrhythmias, making dogs with SAS prone to ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death, particularly between the ages of 3-5 years. Let’s deepen our understanding of this condition and improve outcomes for our canine patients! ??? ?? https://lnkd.in/g3vBZ8CU #CanineCardiology #VETgirlPodcast #PetHealth
