79 years ago, the Battle of Iwo Jima began, leaving behind an enduring symbol of courage—the iconic image of U.S. Marines raising the flag atop Mount Suribachi. Today, we honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought and remember the lives lost. Their legacy stands tall. #Veterans #IwoJima #HonorTheFallen
#OTD in 1945, the Battle of Iwo Jima, the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history, began. From Feb. 19 to Mar. 26, more than 80,000 Marines and US Navy #Sailors from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions grappled with tenacious Japanese defenders dug into Iwo Jima’s volcanic terrain. Japanese forces proved tough as they swept Iwo Jima’s beaches with concentrated fire, but within a few days the #Marines captured Mount Suribachi, and four weeks later they secured the island. Today, the image of six Marines raising an American flag on Mount Suribachi’s summit is immortalized as a symbol of hope and heroism for all Americans.
