Being a SDVOSB, Veterans Day is near and dear to our hearts.?It is a day to remember, reflect and celebrate those who have and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces. ? Brief History of Veterans Day Originally known as Armistice Day, President Woodrow Wilson, in 1919, proclaimed November 11th?to be a commemoration of the end of World War I.? In 1947, Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized the very 1st?National Veterans Day in Birmingham, Alabama and it was held on Armistice Day.?(Raymond Weeks would later receive the Presidential Citizens Medal for President Reagan in November of 1982.) In 1954, a bill, proposed by US Representative Edward Rees of Kansas, was passed by Congress and signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaiming November 11th?as Veterans Day.? ? Fun Fact – In 1968, the national commemoration of Veterans Day was changed to the fourth Monday in October.?However, in 1978, Congress returned the observance to November 11th, recognizing that this date was of great significance to the American people. ? VES would like to invite all Americans to join us in the observance of this special holiday.?We would also like to thank each person who has served and still serves our incredible nation. ? Happy Veterans Day Everyone.

VES supports Breast Cancer Awareness and early detection through screening. Today, October 18th, is National Mammography Day. A preventative mammogram is the first line of defense and can detect a problem long before outward physical signs appear.?Baseline mammograms are provided around the age of 35 unless family history indicates a need for this sooner. The baseline mammogram provides a comparison view for your physician should something develop later down the line. Women age 40 and over are recommended to receive yearly preventative mammograms. If you haven’t already, please schedule your screening today or remind a loved one the importance of screening for early detection. Early Detection Saves Lives! Happy Breast Cancer Awareness Month from VES.

Did you know the United States Air Force did not become a separate branch of the Armed Forces until September 18, 1947? The Signal Corps was established as the first aeronautical force in the United States Military. During the Civil War, the first missions provided visional communications via flags and torchlight from aerial balloons. Despite these missions, the Signal Corps did not become an official branch of the Army until 1863. September 18th, 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act (on board the very first Air Force One) which restructured The United States military and intelligence agencies.?This Act established the United States Air Force as a separate branch of the military. Aeronautics and aviation have undergone many advancements over the years and the US Air Force has emerged as the swiftest tactical force with the most highly trained flight personnel.?This training and dedication to our country have the men and women of the USAF ready to deploy anywhere at a moment's notice. VES asks you to join us in celebrating the airmen and women who are on watch every day as we observe the United States Air Force’s 77th Birthday.

On August 14th, 2002, President George W. Bush proclaimed National Airborne Day.?Nearly six years later, on August 3rd, 2009, the US Senate of the 111th Congress recognized National Airborne Day with Senate Resolution 235 to commemorate the date of the first official Army parachute jump at Ft. Benning, GA ,?August 16th, 1940.?The successful jump validated the innovative concept of inserting U.S. ground combat forces behind a battle line by parachute.?These sky soldiers represent some of the most prestigious and expertly trained forces in the United States Army. Currently, in the U.S. Army, two airborne divisions operate. The 82nd Airborne Division out of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina began as an infantry division. During World War I, the 82nd Division activated on 25 August 1917 at Camp Gordon. In 1918, they earned the nickname All American for the composition of their division. Since the soldiers came not only from all across the United States, but several were immigrants. The 82nd Division represented all of America as few other divisions did at the time. The second and still active airborne division had a short-lived beginning. During World War I, the 101st Airborne Division organized for a short while on November 2, 1918. However, the war ended shortly after de-activating 101st. During World War II, the Screaming Eagles re-activated on?August 16, 1942, at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. They currently make their home at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. Both units have served around the world in combat, peacekeeping, and humanitarian missions.?VES thanks you all for your dedication to and your protection of this wonderful nation we call home.

Happy Flag Day!! Flag Day marks the Second Continental Congress’s adoption of the first flag of the United States on June 14, 1777.?The first flag featured the same 13 red and white stripes we see today, but the number and arrangement of stars have changed as the number of states has increased.?The flag we fly today has remained the same since its adoption in 1960. It is sometimes easy to get caught up in our lives and take things for granted that are a gift.?Flag Day is an important day that allows us the opportunity to remember the bigger picture, that we are all one nation, united. But….did you know that June 14th also marks a birthday??The birthday of the United States Army. VES would like to take a moment to thank all the proud men and women that have served and continue to serve this wonderful nation!?Thank you all!?From the US Army (Happy Birthday), to the Air Force, to the Navy, to the Coast Guard, all the reservists and everyone who has served this great nation, thank you.
