Honoring Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, born on this day. Abraham Lincoln was born into poverty and worked as a surveyor, storekeeper, and postmaster before becoming a self-taught lawyer. On June 16, 1858, as a senatorial candidate, he delivered his famous "House Divided" speech in Springfield after accepting the Illinois Republican Party's nomination. As president, Lincoln led the country through the Civil War and preserved the union. Other notable achievements of his include the Emancipation Proclamation, the Homestead Act, the Gettysburg Address, the Pacific Railway Act, and the establishment of the Department of Agriculture. Lincoln remains the only president to hold a patent and is the most written-about figure in American history, with more than 18,000 books devoted to him. Now, more than ever, we are reminded again: "a house divided against itself can not stand." Let's lift our communities and become good neighbors. As we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let us reflect on Dr. King's profound words: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" Dr. King believed that true greatness is achieved through service to others. He emphasized that everyone has the capacity to serve, stating: "Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." In honor of his legacy, let's come together to strengthen our communities through acts of service. Whether it's volunteering at a local shelter, mentoring a young person, or participating in community clean-ups, every contribution counts. By dedicating our time and energy to help others, we not only uplift those around us but also continue Dr. King's mission of building a more compassionate society.
