We are putting tax myths to the test with a game of TRUE or FALSE, but here are some things you can count on when it comes to taxes. - Even if you have an accountant, the IRS holds you responsible for the accuracy of your tax return. If there’s an error or missing income, you are on the hook for any penalties, interest, or audits—not your accountant. That’s why it’s important to review your return before filing! - Only the income within each tax bracket is taxed at that bracket’s rate. If your year-end bonus pushes you into a higher bracket, only the portion above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate—not all of your income! - Filing an extension only gives you more time to file your return, not more time to pay your taxes. To avoid penalties and interest, you estimate what you owe before April 15 and make that payment with your extension request—ideally with a small buffer—so you’re covered even if final calculations change. - Filing an extension does not increase your chances of an audit. The IRS selects returns for audit either at random or based on specific red flags, not whether you filed on time or extended. In some cases, filing later with more accurate numbers can actually reduce?“errors” that might otherwise trigger an audit! - Some people prefer a big refund as a forced savings tool, but that really means you gave the IRS an interest-free loan all year. Adjusting your withholdings to break even—or get a small refund—lets you keep more of your money throughout the year and put it to work in a high-yield savings account instead!
