We must revive and pass languishing bills to modernize our financial infrastructure. This is 'ground fruit', and much spade work has already been done (read to the bottom for the h/t's). I've read many takes on the impact of the recent election on 'Crypto', and I share the optimism for our 'Blockchain' Industry. I believe this is one area where more people can agree, going forward. But priorities and pet projects and causes will abound. I'm all for letting people take risks when it comes to investing, that's normal and it's how gains/losses are made. If non-accreds can buy 'Iron Condors' via Robinhood and play $GME on WSB, then they should be able to buy some kooky JPG or new coin thing. That's not my dog in this fight, which is building critical but boring technology to help traditional finance upgrade its back and middle-office stack. All of the things - crazy, kooky, boring, and misunderstood things come from the use (or abuse, to some) of Distributed Ledger Technology. How do you really kick off a revolution in finance that satisfies the most constituents? Start at the foundation of the frustration: recognize DLT as a legal way to record share ownership, whether those shares are coins, securities, jpgs, or debt instruments. Today, because of bills stuck in the Senate and a inaccurate conflation of DLT with Crypto (and yes, they are technically inextricable), Transfer Agent technology providers such as Vertalo Broadridge SS&C Technologies Computershare U.S. FIS Franklin Templeton are limited in their use of this technology, and in order to have shares custodied/issued/managed/settled on a DLT-based system require onerous exertions and the filing of 'No-Action Letters' in order to move on from the ossified tech stacks that hobble technological advancement in this, the boiler room of the finance world. Bills, such as S.4019 (https://lnkd.in/g_tRkiG6) introduced in the 117th congress and its sister House bill (HR 8065) have been stuck, languishing despite bi-partisan sponsors and support. These are well-thought out, rational bills that focus on the underlying technology. Other countries have already moved past us on this, notably Singapore. My ask is that the House and Senate, aided and empowered by an incoming Executive branch that was supported overwhelmingly by 'Blockchain' PACs, and with a new SEC, revive these bills and get them passed early in the next session. Enterprise DLT is analogous to TCP/IP for the internet or SMTP for email. Those protocols are not to blame for the content distributed by them, same as DLT use in the regulated / traditional finance function. Thank you legislators.
